On Sunday, we were invited to a picnic. I already knew what I wanted to bring: BUÑUELOS. We had harvested some cassava from the yard, and it was the main ingredient for this delicious treat.
😅 Excuse my appearance, it was extremely hot. The first thing I did was boil the cassava. It was about a kilo.
While still hot, I mashed it with a fork and let it cool.

The dough yielded a lot; I ended up making over 30 buñuelos. The cheese was smoked, giving it a unique flavor.
This was my first time making buñuelos. It’s a really simple recipe often made in Venezuelan households. It’s one of those traditional recipes with indigenous roots. I’m not a nationalist, but living as a foreigner in another country makes me miss certain things a lot.
Trying these buñuelos reminded me of my paternal grandmother; she used to make them when we were little, and it was always a joy when she did.
A few days ago, I saw in a documentary that approximately 122.6 million people are currently displaced or living as foreigners. Can you grasp that number? Most of these displacements result from wars, persecution, violence, and human rights violations.
You and I, whether in our country or another, have basic comforts. But what about the rest? Some live in tents and refugee camps, missing things like being with family, enjoying simple meals with good company, and having a quiet place to rest.
I miss things that pale in comparison to what millions of people go through and their hardships.
My message is: smooth that wrinkle from your forehead, smile, and think about what you have to be grateful for today.
