I've done some electrical work before and it has a logic to it. Before I went crazy doing this I studied a manual illustrating the basics of performing electrical work. Mind you that I have shocked myself a few times before learning the proper electrical code. Exposed connections may work fine but are dangerous. Safety first but kudos to you for taking this job on @d-honeyb
You're right, exposed connections are dangerous. I covered the connection actually with a transparent tape for safety.
