Ladies of Hive Community Contest #60
Mid-Autumn Festival
Festival de Medio Otoño
Truth be told, I have not had the chance to participate in any celebration or custom of any culture other than my own, but, there really are many that I would like to be a part of at some point in my life as they have a rich history and culture for their people that really fascinates me.
The festival that I wish to experience above most is the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. The Chang Er story is the most widely accepted story about the origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival. According to it, in ancient times there were ten suns and the extreme heat made people's lives very difficult. It was the young Hou Yi who, thanks to his courage, defeated nine of the ten suns, becoming a hero in the whole country. Soon after, the young man married a beautiful and kind woman named Chang Er.
One day, Hou Yi met the queen of heaven, who Wangmu gifted him with an elixir that, should he drink it, would cause him to immediately ascend to heaven and become immortal. Instead of drinking the potion, Hou Yi took it home and showed it to Chang Er who was charged with keeping it. Unfortunately, the evil Peng Meng, learned of this.
Soon after Hou Yi went hunting, Peng Meng rushed into the house, demanding Chang Er to hand over the elixir. The woman, in order not to hand it over, took out the elixir and swallowed it immediately. At that very moment, she flew out of the window to the moon, which is the closest celestial body to the earth.
Upon realizing what happened to his wife, Hou Yi began to call out to her and was surprised to see a figure resembling his wife on the Moon. He set up an altar and offered her food as an offering. So did the neighbors, who burned incense to express their good wishes for Chang Er. This became a custom that was repeated every year.
People celebrate this by admiring the moon and eating traditional moon cakes with their loved ones and honoring this ancient history. I wish to participate in this tradition someday and believe me I am going to do it.

It's so romantic, isn't it? Have you seen the animated movie inspired by that festival? It's called Over the Moon. My kids love that movie, and I love the OSTs. 😁 I think you'll like it, if you haven't seen it yet. 😊
I am part Chinese so I am already familiar a few versions of the story but I love the taste of Moon cake, especially those with red Bean or almond paste filling, hold the egg yolk.
Thanks for participating @mariarellanoch 🌖
