As a kid, most of my clothing was sponsored by my aunt, who works at SO-EN in Manila. She had no kid, and we were her first niece, so we got to enjoy the dresses, skirts, jeans, blouses, and shoes every time she came home to our province, Southern Leyte. Until today, my mom still remembers how thankful she is to my aunt for providing for us without asking for anything in return. My mom saved a good chunk of money.
During my high school years, my aunt was not around anymore, so we didn’t have the most trendy clothes that a teen could ever have. My mom would still buy clothes for us occasionally, but it was never the same as before.
When I started earning my own money, I befriended the online shopping apps. I guess I was healing my inner child. They say the things that you lacked before would be the same things that you’ll always shop for as an adult. It was partly true for me.
While I was addicted to the different shopping apps, I irresponsibly added to cart and checked out the items that weren’t really a necessity.
As of today, I have learned my lesson. I wanted to look good without hurting my pocket. I would go for trusty and durable materials that last long. It is better to buy an expensive one than to have to buy the same thing again and again. I rarely buy bottoms, so I go for the best ones.
- For example, this linen trouser was sourced from the orange app. It cost me 750 Php or 12.89 USD. It has been with me for three years now, and it still looks good and new.
- Another strategy that works for me is online thrifting. I have acquired a red Uniqlo trouser for 300 PHP or 5.15 USD. It still looked good, and it's perfect for special occasions.
On days when I have no choice but to buy a new top, I limit myself to a certain spending limit. This is to lessen the chance of overspending, regret, and frustration.
I also practice the art of decluttering. When I acquire a new pair of jeans, I give away the old but still good ones to my cousins. I gave away the clothes that I don’t wear anymore to provide a space in my cabinet. This happens every time they visit our house.
I may not achieve my goal of minimalism yet, but I’m surely working on it. Having less and using less would mean less waste, less harm for the environment, definitely lower costs, and not hurting the pocket.
I hope I have helped, and you have gained something from me today. Thank you for dropping by!
