In the spirit of world international women's day, I wrote this piece for every woman out there and to let you know that I see you.
In a world where men are seen as Alfa's, or more important, women on the other hand are perceived as weak and less important. In Africa especially, women are considered weak and vulnerable as they are expected to be subjects to the men, like they basically live their lives under the shadows of the men. This just didn't start today, it has been like that ever since, and I can't really tell if it's getting worst or better.
The society has caused women to believe that they are not enough, and women on the other hand tend to go out of line to prove otherwise. A woman cannot be overly ambitious, if she tries, she would be pulled down by the society back to the shadow of the man where she is proclaimed to belong. Bad things and unfortunate things are all pointing to the woman, if a woman is of marriageable age and isn't married, then something is wrong with her, she will be labeled as one who has bad behaviour and no man wants her for a wife, if she is married and her husband is displaying some bad attitude and not taking up his responsibility as the man, something is still wrong with her, she is either accused of not being responsible herself or has done something wrong to the man for making him act in that manner. What if she can't conceive in the marriage, ofcourse it's her fault, I mean she is the one to carry the pregnancy after all, she should be responsible for not being able to conceive, she is either tagged barren, before the doctor pronounce her so, or she is accused of being reckless and irresponsible during her single days, which resulted to she removing or damaging her womb due to series of abortions, and abruptly, the society forgets that men can be impotent or have a medical condition that can hinder them from bearing children. Okay she is ambitious, went against all odds to achieve her dreams, she is now successful, again the society will muster-up to her thatno man will want to make you his wife because he will be intimidated by your success, and you can't submit to him.. She is divorced, an independent and a single parent, again the society would be like why did she leave her marriage, or she left her marriage to be promiscuous.. A child portrays an unruly behaviour, it's ofcourse the woman's fault.
Overtime, we see women pass through all these and more, and they keep struggling to be accepted regardless of whatever is thrown at them. The society made us believe that the strength of a woman is measured by how much nonsense or how much pain she can handle, this narrative is wrong and needs to be changed. I oblige women to be indifferent about how the society perceive, and restrain from trying so hard to be perfect, because the truth is, they can't be perfect, no one is, they are not wired to be perfect, because they are perfectly imperfect just the way they are.
