1. Pads
When I started bleeding mom gave me a pad. I remember how uncomfortable it was at the first time.
Advantage
Mess free - Can be well handled even in the smallest bathroom.
Disadvantages
- It can make sound while you walk (not always though)
- You feel there is something between your legs
- You need to bath regularly or clean yourself cuz there is blood around vulva. (you know how bathing in winters feel like)
- It also harms the environment unless disposed in a pad incinerator.
Facility of incinerating is not everywhere.
2. Tampon
My mother refused to allow me to use it. It was a strict NO from her may be due to some stigmas around it. I decided to secretly give it a try at the age of 17. Inserting was painful at first but that's fine.
Advantage
- It keeps you clean from blood.
- Doing physical activities is a lot easier.
Disadvantages
- Due to constant fear of 'Toxic Shock Syndrome' you need to change it after every 6-7 hours.
I remember in sleep too I counted hours when to change. - Its expensive - you should have 22-25 tampons per cycle.
Finally my mom found my tampons and took them in her possession. Anyways I was not very keen in using them.
3. Menstrual Cup
I secretly purchased them a month after trying tampons.
When I inserted my cup on non period day, it took some time but went inside. Then it refused to come out. I panicked a bit but calmly took it out.
Now to smoothen the process I tried insertion and removal for so many days. I didn't have lube so I orgasmed to get natural lube then tried it.😉
Now I am a pro at it.
Advantages
- It can be kept for longer hours
- Possibility of TSS is negligible
- Cost effective
- Produces zero waste.
Disadvantages
- Can create mess in a public washroom
- Hands should be absolutely clean
- Can't remove it in a moving train washroom in India.
4. Period Underwear
I am yet to try them.
