Let there be light

in Ladies of Hivelast year

There is nothing I hate more than noise. It's not just noise, it is deafening, unending noise. It is Diwali here in these parts of the globe, the festival of lights, but it turns out to be the festival of noise. The sound of firecrackers have gone on non stop for the last three days. Sometimes the noise starts at 6am and goes on to about 1am., no I am not exaggerating. We can't work or sleep in peace.

Forget us humans, India is not only a heavily populated country but we also have loads of animals - stray and owned walking the streets of our cities and villages. There are stray dogs which we lovingly call street dogs because they own the streets. There are at least about 3-5 dogs which guard each street. Most people feed them and keep them alive but won't give them a little space in their yards or homes. Can you imagine the plight of these creatures? The deafening noise makes them lose their mind.

How do I know? Well, years ago my friend's dog was so afraid of the noise that she ran away from their home. She was so out of her mind that she didn't know getting out of the house even more dangerous for her. They never did find her despite searching all over the city.

My own dogs haven't eaten in five days, they neither want to pee or poop for the fear of having a firecracker burst somewhere when they are doing their job. My husband has been taking them out around 2 am when the city sleeps. They just do the job and scoot in the direction of our home. My dogs have been shaking with fear in the last one week. No amount of petting them or holding them in our arms seem to calm them. They are mortally scared. Can you even guess the plight of those homeless strays?

The crazy thing is the city has banned firecrackers after 10 pm on paper, but who cares for the law. Law and order is asleep, its Diwali! I love watching people having fun but not at the expense of other. I wish they would consider the aged, the sick and the mentally challenged people around. These humans also need their peace. Each time I hear a bomb go off (the loudest noise making cracker shaped like a bomb) I feel rattled from within. My heart condition is unable to take anymore of these loud noises. I've never been scared of firecrackers before, just to keep things in perspective.

My friend's son who is mentally challenged used to hate Diwali, he would repeat, "No Diwali." This little boy used to cringe each time a fire cracker went off. He would cry, be irritable and get violent at times during this festive season. The unspeakable fear that we have seen in his eyes as he closed his ears and ran to and fro was tormenting for his parents and those who loved the little boy.

Have fun, enjoy, light up the beautiful Diyas (earthen lamps) share sweets and dance like you do, its beautiful and we share in your joy. Nonetheless please considered the sick, the elderly, the babies and the animals - not just dogs, but birds, cows, goats, the squirrels and other little creatures who share our planet with us.

I can only say to my neighbors and country men light the fireworks in open grounds further from homes, join your friends make it a community affair make it beautiful. Please cut out the noise, if you can keep it to certain times of the day so it not so terrorizing for the not so able humans and animals.

Please consider donating the money spent on fire crackers to the underprivileged, there are millions in our land. Perhaps you could adopt animals and give them shelter in your homes. When I used to work with a rescue center for birds we would get so many wounded birds during the festive season.

Light up lamps, they are beautiful, sadly I've hardly seen any during this year. Find other ways of celebrating and make it a happy season for everyone. Let there be light and joy all around. Happiness is doubled only when it is shared. Let this be a season of happiness for those around us as well. Happy Diwali!

I am autistic and I can share how you feel about noise. And the fact December is coming stresses me out so much

I hope you find peace @danigada18 . The noise is really very stressful. I truly hope you enjoy this season of love and joy.

Firecrackers are an abomination if I may say so. People can be inconsiderate and only think of their own fun and not think about others. It's sad that authorities allow such things to happen. It is okay if it's only for a day, but my gosh, days and nights! Even a sane person would go bonkers, so how much more for the challenged and the animals?

PS. Your dogs are adorable 🥰

Hmm.. the noise still continues. but only every now and then. My dogs are still stressed.
You are right even sane people will lose it.
Thank you for your kindwords.
Have a wonderful weekend @ifarmgirl
