This is my entry for Ladies of Hive Community Contest 220.
Question:
Most of us are either working from home or in an office, sitting for hours to get work done. What are the hacks or exercises you do to reduce sedentary challenges?
During my DPE graduation with my father... :)
I have been working from home for more than 10 years now, though, for a year around 2015-2016, I tried to balance work and school as I tried to get a Diploma for Professional Education, and then reviewed for the license exam for teachers. I continued working every night back then, so I lived quite an active and busy life.
However, after I finished that quest, I decided to continue working from home as an online English teacher. I dread commuting, so this setup is perfect for me.
In the past, I used to work straight hours, but it made me tired easily. I didn't have the chance to exercise and I used to suffer from backache because of the long hours of sitting. I also had a sore throat and my eyes weren't doing well either due to the long and continuous screen time.
My schedule last week...
Because of this, I decided to arrange my schedule in a way that I'd have breaks in between my classes. During my 30-minute break, I stand up and stretch. It's important to improve blood circulation after sitting for an hour or so. I sometimes do just a 5-minute stretching, then make a blog... or do other things every break time.
I mostly wake up at around 6:30 AM and ride the stationary bicycle before my morning classes, however, we recently got a new fur baby, so I tend to play with our dogs Arashi and Max, instead.
The stationary bicycle used to be in the place where Max currently stays during the daytime. Due to this change, we transferred the stationary bicycle to my room. This move allows me to exercise during my break time from work.
My office space is under my bed and I have a small space for doing some activities beside it. Before the bike was placed in my room, I just walked in place or did some stretches. These little things are important for me, otherwise, I'd be too tired to work.
Now, there's no reason for me not to exercise... it may not be a long continuous session, but a few short biking sessions during my break time are more than enough.
I also try to go for a walk for an hour or so at least once a week. (mostly every Wednesday morning)
Working from home and having the chance to arrange my schedule is truly ideal for me.
My January schedule so far...
Aside from my main job, I have some personal or Skype students. The majority of them request classes on weekends, though some of them also request a weekday class.
I may be busy most days, but I don't work for straight hours. Having a schedule that suits you and allows you to balance your life is essential.
I enjoy my job and I plan to continue doing so for a long time. That's why, I should also take care of my health by trying to avoid a sedentary life despite the nature of my job (requires sitting down in front of the PC).
Taking the first step may be challenging, but once you start and keep at it, it'll easily be a part of your everyday routine. I didn't like exercising in the past, but I'm not getting any younger... in addition, exercise did wonders for my insomnia a couple of years back, so to continue having a good night's sleep, I decided to be consistent with exercising as much as possible. :)
I do cheat from time to time. I either skip exercise or eat a lot of unhealthy snacks, but I just consider them as a treat for my mental health. hahaha
Thanks for reading and see you around! Have a great one! (^^,)/
Wow that's a lot of great way to keep sedentary challenges away from you, walking straight hours is a danger itself, glad you have your ways around it now.
