Hi Everyone,

The snowfield we have chosen this year is Up Kannabe which is around 2hrs drive from Osaka (longer if you stop along the way for those pit stops). It is a small resort but enough for us as we wanted to stay away from the crowds. The danger for picking something so small is the facilities here won't be as new as some of the bigger ones like Hakuba or Niseko but we know for sure there will be fewer crowds as we have seen from the pictures online.

We initially wanted to query for snowboarding lessons for the boys as they know a little from last time and want to brush out their skills but the issue here is there was only 1 school that does snowboarding which is 5 minutes drive from our resort which was fine but they don't have any English speaking teachers until the weekend which doesn't help us. So we decided to go back to our ski field and see if we could do ski school instead.

Another hurdle, all schools don't have English instructors. They did have a very simple translated form for us to read with the prices, times, rules and so on. Due to the small crowd, they advised only morning classes are available. We decided to enroll both boys into ski school as they both wanted to try it out and decide later on if they like to ski or snowboard but we were worried there would be a language barrier so Hubby enrolled too so he could be their translator but also an opportunity for him to learn skiing. He is pretty confident with snowboarding so this is a new ski he will pick up. I didn't want to ski so I went on snowboarding instead. The cost for the 3 of them was 20000 yen for 2 hours. Gear hire was around 3000-5000 yen each (child and adult differences) and lift passes for the green slope were 2000 yen each.

They learned the basics for an hour or so and were already on the greens to learn the "S" which was fun. The sun was getting a bit strong so they took off their jackets and just skied in their normal clothes. The boys had a great time, they told me they enjoyed skiing more than snowboarding though I told them they look much cooler on a snowboard. I guess on the next ski trip, we will see if they want to ski or snowboard since they both have the skills for them.
