Most Digital Game Stores sell you a license for the games you buy. These licenses can be taken away from you, and they might even expire depending on the game.
I also like how GOG has been like this from the start. I've been buying more and more games on their service through the years. Feels a lot better even if you might sometimes pay a bit more and their catalog isn't as extensive as Steam.
The thing is, it'll never be as extensive as Steam. A lot of publishers want DRM in their games, and while that's fair. The fact GOG doesn't have DRM is what makes it an amazing store.
