Yes you can follow a trail or start your own. I use to use https://hive.vote/# but haven't in a few years. There is a discord link on that page so that may help you find out more. Just watch your VP if you join a trail. It can use it up fast. :)

Yeah, I like to manually curate. Following a trail can be good if you don't have a lot of time to spend on chain.
