It's really a hit or miss for me. Whether I like an audiobook or not depends on the genre, subject, writing style, and especially the narrator and his voice. Besides, just as @macchiata I think audiobooks are good for leisure time, not serious reading (science, history, etc.).

As a sidenote, I strongly recommend the Tube channel Horror Babble if you like classic horror stories, especially Lovecraft et consortes. Ian does a fantastic job as a narrator, and some of his recordings are real audio dramas with music, background sounds, and so on.

Wanting to improve on reading more without the actual time to sit down and open a book is quite the annoyance, figured audiobooks could be a good "in-between" I will give one a shot regardless!
