In italian language we have a similar meaning in the "Tutti sono utili, nessuno è indispensabile" (literally means "everyone is useful no one is indispensable"), but I think is sad and not so true, because everyone is indispensable for people who loves him/her. ❤️

That's true, the ego is one of the deceptions comes along with mankind. The day we realized that we are able to walk on the earth, we thought that we can own it. As much as we stand up on it, we must also lay down and sleep. And sleep is a pre-tour of graveyards...
I believe this saying not about ego but about working too hard thinking that no one can do your job while your life is passing by.

No. I am immortal until my work is done, but the elders that to me seemed indispensable to me passed on, and that taught me: so must I, so I had better prepare those who are going to take my place. When the work I am called to do is done, I shall be gone.
