Hello, dear ecency community! It's interesting how sometimes certain memories come flooding back. Today I decided to fight this hot March and finish some pending tasks around the house. So, while cleaning the paintings in the living room, I came across these three paintings of the city of Coro, and it was inevitable that the memories would come flooding back. But first, I want you to appreciate the beauty of these works, which were undoubtedly made with much love.
Que tal estimada comunidad de ecency! Es interesante como a veces vienen ciertos recuerdos, hoy decidí hacerle la guerra a este marzo caluroso y terminar ciertas tareas pendientes en la casa, entonces mientras limpiaba los cuadros que están en la sala me topé con estos 3 cuados de la ciudad de Coro y fue inevitable para mi que los recuerdos llegaran. Pero primero quiero que aprecien la belleza que estas obras que sin duda fueron hechos con mucho amor.
Well, what stands out most about these paintings is the artistic technique used to create them. They are not oil paintings on canvas, but rather paintings made with scraps of goat hide. In Falcón State, goat farming is one of the most exploited sectors there, and this artist uses the hide to make his paintings. It's also interesting because I got to know the artist and his humility was incredible. He didn't sign his paintings, and he created these works of art out of the love he felt for the Falcon state and particularly the city of Coro.
Bueno, lo que más destaca de estos cuadros es la técnica artística utilizada para crearlos, pues no son cuadros pintados al oleo sobre tela, sino que son cuadros hechos con retazos de cuero de chivo. Y es que en el Estado Falcón la cría de chivos es uno de los rubros más explotados allá y este artista usa el cuero para hacer sus cuadros. También es interesante porque llegué a conocer al artista y su humildad era algo increíble, no firmaba sus cuadros y hacía estas obras de arte por el amor que sentía con el Estado falcón y particularmente la ciudad de Coro.
Now, why the city of Coro? What makes it so special? Well, it turns out this is the oldest colonial city in Venezuela, dating back to 1527, long before the founding of Caracas in 1567. These paintings are a representation of the corners of the colonial city and the way of life on those plots of almost desert land, given that this state is located very close to the coast, the northernmost point in Venezuela.
Ahora bien, ¿Porqué la ciudad de Coro? ¿Qué la hace tan especial? Pues resulta que esta es la ciudad colonial más antigua de Venezuela en 1527, mucho antes de la fundación de la Ciudad de Caracas que fue en 1567. Estos cuadros son una representación de las esquinas de la ciudad colonial y del modo de vida en aquellas parcelas de tierra casi desértica ya que este estado se encuentra muy cerca de la costa ya que es el el lugar más al norte de Venezuela.
Many stories and legends have surrounded this city, from the enigmatic scarlet moon that frightened the Spanish conquistadors for decades to the story of ghosts that stalk lonely travelers. But these are legends that have existed for centuries. More recently, a phenomenon worthy of mention occurred: in 1998, a solar eclipse occurred in the city of Coro, which became a national event. In that sense, the artist of these paintings immortalized the moment in one of his works. This phenomenon had occurred previously, but 100 years ago, when our way of life was still rural, and of course, explanations of the "black sun" were associated with the supernatural, a product of our syncretism, inherited from a colonial past and mixed-race culture.
Mucha historias y leyendas han rodeado a esta ciudad, desde la enigmática luna escarlata que durante décadas atemorizó a los conquistadores españoles, hasta historia de espantos que acechan a los viajeros solitarios. Pero estas son leyendas que existen desde hace siglos, más recientemente ocurrió un fenómeno digno de ser comentado y es que en 1998 ocurrió un eclipse de sol en la ciudad de Coro que se convirtió en todo un evento para el país y en ese sentido el artista de estos cuadros inmortalizó el momento en una de sus obras. Este fenómeno había ocurrido anteriormente pero hace 100 años atrás cuando nuestro modo de vida seguía siendo rural y por supuesto las explicaciones del "sol negro" estuvieron asociadas a lo sobrenatural producto de nuestro sincretismo herencia de un pasado colonial y de mestizaje.
