I have been working on a company that is publicly listed in the USA stock market. It is not big tech (for big tech read FAANG) but it is well regarded and well known. Although it is not one of the half a dozen companies that can call themselves "big tech" I will call it big tech because it is a big company and it is a tech company. For brazilian standards it is huge! I will also avoid sharing details about the company, its name and what I have been doing, but it is work I am very proud of.
Because of the high demands I have not been able to engage in open-source projects. I am posting this to vent out that I want to go back to developing open-source software and engage in the community, and to get there I will start slowly. I will maybe reserve 1 or 2 hours a day, every other day, initially to read what is happening on Hive. I will ramp up to contributing with real code after I know what is trending and where help is needed.
Time goes by so fast. 2024 has been a great year for my career, but nothing comes for free, I mean, I have been making good money, my salary is great, specially for brazilian standards, but the price I paid was leaving my passion for open-source behind.
When I talk about software with friends that don't work on the same company, heck, even in the same sector! It feels awkward to not be able to get into details. With open-source you are free to nerd out about everything! That is magical! That is what makes software development beautiful!
Open-source is what makes life interesting.
