Great post and beautiful photos!

Your post made me recall a memory from childhood. My grandparents used to rent a summer house on the east side of Oʻahu and one door down was a small community cemetery. I remember it well because many of the headstones had photos of the deceased.

The graveyard had such a melancholy atmosphere. Some markers had been there since the late 1800s. While that may seem "young" to many Europeans, for us in Hawaiʻi that seems ages ago.

I used to find it peaceful to walk the rows, reading the names and looking at the photos. I would try to imagine what each person may have been like when they were alive. I know it sounds morbid, but that little place sparked my fascination with cemeteries and memorials.
