My son and his wife are on holiday in Zihuatanejo, Mexico to escape this dreary time of year in Chicago. They are enjoying the small town vibe, great food and the fact that taxis only cost $4.
They got these great photos of the moon while they waited for it to turn red and they wanted me to share them here.
What exactly causes a "Blood Moon"?
A "Blood Moon" happens during a total lunar eclipse, when the sun, Earth and the moon align in that order. Long wavelengths of sunlight are refracted through Earth's atmosphere before reaching the moon, which reflects them in reddish hues that may resemble the color of blood

It is rare, but there will be another in March 2026. I don't know what parts of the world will be able to view it

Hello Melinda! How interesting! This phenomenon occurs naturally and frequently on the northernmost coasts of Venezuela. Legends about this phenomenon arose during the time of the Conquest, more than 500 years ago. It was said that the scarlet moon, when it appeared, was a sign cursing the conquistadors for seeking the City of the Sun, also known as "El Dorado." Best regards.

I would have looked if I happened to wake up, but my luck if I would have set an alarm it would have been to cloudy to see it!

Amazing shot, the last image is just amazing the deep red is so dramatic creating a mysterious atmosphere in the night sky.

This was early Friday morning here. I'm glad you saw it, too.
My daughter sent me the news that they were supposed to have a Red Moon in Moscow. But it was snowing on Friday and the Moon was not visible.
It happens so often here. Cloudy skies block views of the moon and stars.
