Galena Illinois is a charming small town at any time of year, but add a fresh snowfall and it turns into a storybook village!

The slogan on their tourist literature is "The town that time forgot"

It was an unexpected event that my kids were unaware of before arriving in town to spend the weekend before Christmas, but here are a couple of photos of people walking the streets dressed in their Christmas pajamas!
It seems there was a holiday onsie pub crawl, and people were going from bar to bar dressed in their festive nightwear! There were drink specials and contests and giveaways at each bar.

This couple came out to discover a flat tire on their car. Who could resist getting a few candid photos of the matching onsie tire changing experience! I am pretty sure they will remember this evening for years to come!

Well before Illinois became a state, Native American tribes (the Sac and Fox) living in the area mined galena ore (lead sulfide), the source of lead. Pioneer settlers also exploited the area’s lead resources, eventually displacing the Native Americans who first mined here. In the 1820s, galena ore became the focus of the first major “mineral rush” in the United States. Many old mines can still be found all over SW Wisconsin and the northwest corner of Illinois.
