From 7 Days a Week to Weekends and Holiday Offs

Hello, friends of Hive! It’s Throowback Thursday, and today, I’m taking you back to February 2024—a time when a stranger walked into my life and changed it for the better.

At the time, I was working at a small café, earning minimum wage. Being new to the area and eager for a change, I gladly took the job. Sure, the pay wasn’t great, but it was a start. My duties weren’t complicated—chopping potatoes for chips (as we call them here), preparing fresh juice, frying eggs, smokies, and sausages. Small, (easy) tasks, but when rush hour hit, things got hectic. Customers would get on my nerves, and I’d have to switch into machine mode to keep up. This was my routine, week after week, without a single day off. My shift ran from 10:30 AM to 9:00 PM.

Then came a Wednesday that I’ll never forget. A customer walked in with his friends to order fries and juice. At the time, he was just another customer. They had come to our side of town after experiencing a huge setback—the county government had demolished a building they had constructed. It was heartbreaking to watch their hard work get taken down by a bulldozer. The demolitions were the talk of the town that week.

That Friday, the same man returned for another serving of chips and a glass of passion juice. As I was preparing his order, he casually glanced around the stall and suggested some additional food ideas that could boost our sales. I listened, thanked him for his insight, and mentioned that I would relay the information to my boss. That’s when he looked at me in shock and asked,* “Wait… you’re not the owner?”*

I laughed and told him I was just an employee, still searching for a better-paying job. His response took me by surprise. “Do you have computer skills?” he asked.

I told him I did, though I hadn’t used them much recently. He reassured me, “As long as you can handle a computer, especially Microsoft Word, you’re good to go.”

Then, right in front of me, he made a call to his friend—a lawyer—who was urgently looking for a secretary. Lucky for me, she hadn’t found one yet. Right then and there, we scheduled an interview for the following Monday.

That Monday, I met my new and current boss—a wonderful lady. Working for her has been a blessing. It has given me the opportunity to view the legal side of my country, something I had never imagined for myself.

I’m not yet where I want to be in life, but I’m on my way there.

From working seven days a week to enjoying weekends and holidays off—all thanks to one stranger who saw potential in me. Sometimes, life places you in luck’s path and leaves the ball in your court. All you have to do is take the shot.

Thank you for stopping by and walking with me down the memory lane💞.

That's strictly me in the photos🙂
