Dreams Do Come True

I was 12 when I first saw Coldplay’s Fix You music video on MTV. Ever since that time, their music has been a constant playlist from iPod nano days up until this very day. Coldplay always takes the top spot in the most played artist and music wrap up in my Spotify account every year—by that alone it’s a no-brainer that they are my all time fave band. Haha

Looking back, I remember how I used to write my faith goals each year and include one line over and over: to watch Coldplay live someday. So when the band announced that they were having a concert in the Philippines in 2017, I asked my Papa for permission to go to Manila and watch them live. I was so excited and couldn’t believe at how soon my faith goal was going to be answered, but then Papa said NO. That’s when my vision of seeing Coldplay live became blurry and then tears fell uncontrollably from my eyes.

While crying and sulking, Papa said: “Indi na maghibi, ma tan-aw mo gid na sila indi lang subong. Malay mo sa iban pa na lugar.” This I can and will never forget. I recall laughing inside because in my mind I thought—if I couldn’t watch them live in my own country, how much more abroad?

Fast forward to July 13, 2022—five years later, I found myself at Olympiastadion Berlin, amongst a sea of foreigners, together with one of my closest friends watching Coldplay play live before my eyes.

IT’S CRAZY HOW GOD SURPRISES YOU.

When the band started playing an all too familiar tune, I had a feeling of déjà vu. My vision became blurry again and I was a crying mess—although this time it wasn’t because my heart was broken, but rather because it became somewhat whole again. I remembered what my Papa said and how I wished I can video call him as Chris Martin sang Fix You. I imagined telling Papa, “You were right all along.” Who would ever think that I’d actually get to see Coldplay in a live concert, and not even in the Philippines, but in Germany?! I still can’t contain my awe at the thought that back in the day when I wasn’t allowed to watch the concert in Manila, God has started fixing things for me in the background that led to this destined day.

So Pops, thanks for not allowing me to go to the concert in 2017 because seeing Coldplay in 2022 and thinking that you were up there watching with me was an experience that was more than a thousand times better—one that I will cherish and never ever forget.
