Hola, estimados amigos, una vez más gracias a todos por la visita a este espacio donde semanalmente compartimos experiencias y oportunidades de aprendizaje. Sobre todo el aprendizaje de los más pequeños, que es el que ocupa gran parte de mi currículum personal y profesional. Por consiguiente, continuando con el proceso de lectura, el tema sobre la atención visual es fundamental.

▶Hello, dear friends, once again thank you all for visiting this space where we share experiences and learning opportunities on a weekly basis. Especially the learning of the youngest children, which is what occupies a large part of my personal and professional curriculum. Therefore, continuing with the reading process, the topic of visual attention is fundamental.

Indiscutiblemente para leer necesitamos mirar las letras impresas en el papel; y no sólo eso, necesitamos que los ojos recorran las palabras y las líneas en una sincronía dual, para que el acto de leer fluya adecuadamente. Sabemos que los niños autistas tienen destacadas habilidades visuales; sin embargo, la atención no es una de sus fortalezas.

▶Undoubtedly, in order to read we need to look at the letters printed on the paper; and not only that, we need our eyes to scan the words and lines in a dual synchrony, so that the act of reading flows properly. We know that autistic children have outstanding visual skills; however, attention is not one of their strengths.

La atención como habilidad cognitiva, forma parte central de las funciones ejecutivas y no se constituye en una sola dimensión; por el contrario, es una cualidad que se desplaza para hacia diferentes áreas del desarrollo del niño, coadyuvando la consolidación de los aprendizajes. De allí la importancia de potenciarla en el proceso de le lectura.

▶Attention, as a cognitive skill, is a central part of executive functions and is not a single dimension; on the contrary, it is a quality that moves towards different areas of the child's development, helping to consolidate learning. Hence the importance of enhancing it in the reading process.

La atención visual es la habilidad de mirar algo o cuando los ojos se fijan en un objeto u objetivo en el entorno. La atención visual es pre-requisito para el reconocimiento visual.

Un adecuado desarrollo de la atención visual en el acto de leer, no sólo va a permitir el reconocimiento de las letras; sino también la comprensión de lo que se lee, porque los ojos tendrán la habilidad de desplazarse con atención sobre las palabras sin perder el hilo de la lectura.

Visual attention is the ability to look at something or when the eyes are fixed on an object or target in the environment. Visual attention is a prerequisite for visual recognition.

An adequate development of visual attention in the act of reading will not only allow the recognition of letters; but also the understanding of what is read, because the eyes will have the ability to move attentively over the words without losing the thread of the reading.

Desde la experiencia sé que los niños autistas poseen una fortaleza visual de diferente índole que le permite apropiarse de propiedades de los materiales, imágenes, diagramas, mapas, secuencias ilustradas…sin embargo, también he podido darme cuenta de que sus niveles atencionales, en general, no son adecuado; es decir, fluctúan, no se ajustan a las características de la tarea. Por ello, la necesidad de trabajar sobre la atención visual.

▶From experience I know that autistic children have a different kind of visual strength that allows them to appropriate properties of materials, images, diagrams, maps, illustrated sequences... However, I have also been able to realize that their attention levels, in general, are not adequate; that is, they fluctuate, they do not adjust to the characteristics of the task. Hence the need to work on visual attention.

Cuando un niño no tiene fortalecido la coordinación de esquemas donde se involucra la vista, por ejemplo, la coordinación vosimotora para escribir; la coordinación prensión- visión, para la manipulación de todo tipo de objetos; la coordinación para atender a estímulos ambientales, involucrando la vista hacia la fuente, los aprendizajes no se consolidan debidamente.

▶When a child does not have a strong coordination of patterns that involve sight, for example, vosimotor coordination for writing; prehension-vision coordination for handling all types of objects; coordination to attend to environmental stimuli, involving sight towards the source, learning is not properly consolidated.

▶In general, when there are interferences in attending to the learning objective, we will have important failures that become more acute over time, leaving gaps that are later difficult to equate with a leveled learning, not only to the grade, but to the competencies required by the moment of the child's development. Therefore, it is necessary that we pay attention to these details and that we keep ourselves informed about the new findings on the reading process.

En general, cuando presenta interferencias para atender a al objeto de aprendizaje, tendremos importantes fallas que se agudizan con el tiempo, dejando vacíos que posteriormente son difíciles de equiparar con un aprendizaje nivelado, no sólo al grado, sino a las competencias que exige el momento de desarrollo del niño. Por ello es preciso que pongamos nuestra atención a estos detalles y que nos mantengamos informados sobre los nuevos hallazgos sobre el proceso lector.

He tenido la oportunidad de mencionar, en esta columna, algunas fuentes de investigadores que están actualmente progresando en las mejoras del aprendizaje infantil. Sobre el proceso lector y la atención visual hay una interesante propuesta de Stanislas Dehaene en su libro El Cerebro Lectordonde aborda en forma muy perspicaz la atención visual y todo lo que involucra la administración de la vista y los movimientos de los ojos para mejorar el proceso lector.

▶I have had the opportunity to mention, in this column, some sources from researchers who are currently making progress in improving children's learning. Regarding the reading process and visual attention, there is an interesting proposal by Stanislas Dehaene in his book El Cerebro Lector where he addresses in a very insightful way visual attention and everything that involves the management of sight and eye movements to improve the reading process.

Algunas actividades para estimular la atención visual en lo niños con autismo.

El material visual y concreto, por sus características les va muy bien a los niños autistas. Es importante disponer de recursos llamativos, de colores, texturas y movimiento, ya que estas cualidades garantizan en gran medida la calidad de la atención que los niños presten a las actividades. Es por eso que actividades como hacer y copiar modelos de con bloques de construcción; armar rompecabezas; leer cuentos con sonidos y texturas; juegos de veo, veo y buscar personajes incognito; buscar semejanzas, diferencias e iguales; laberintos; seguir secuencias de trazos. Entre otras actividades que impliquen secuencias visuales que deben mantenerse desde el inicio hasta el final de la actividad.

▶Some activities to stimulate visual attention in children with autism.

Visual and concrete material, due to its characteristics, is very good for autistic children. It is important to have eye-catching resources, with colors, textures and movement, since these qualities largely guarantee the quality of attention that children pay to activities. That is why activities such as making and copying models with building blocks; putting together puzzles; reading stories with sounds and textures; games of I spy and looking for incognito characters; looking for similarities, differences and the same; mazes; following sequences of strokes. Among other activities that involve visual sequences that must be maintained from the beginning to the end of the activity.
