There's a difference between the desire a person has for other people and the desire that same person has to achieve a goal but either way it's the desire that motivates action and the actions that must come to pass which will help move that person closer to what it is they wish to achieve; a work task, health or sporting goal and even a relationship goal perhaps. It's said that whatever a person fervently desires, can vividly imagine and completely believe in is possible, but not without action.
Desire and determination belong together and if present often mean a person is able to apply themselves to tasks with an unrelenting commitment and that usually means an achievement will occur; but to be desirous of the wrong things can be fraught with danger and lead some down paths best left untraveled. Either way, desire is a powerful motivator and if it is powerful enough not much can stand in a person's path.
I've desired many things and like to think most of them were wholesome, valuable and worthy of that powerful emotion but, of course, not all were. Fortunately I mostly discovered that early on and made changes so had the ability to move in different directions but what I else I most definitely learned was how powerful desire can be if backed with the other elements. It's for this reason I believe we must be quite careful about what we desire and why.

It's like that, desires and thoughts create things on another plane that can materialise on that one if you put action, they can be fulfilled at different times and that's why you must be very careful, think and wish well.
