I am an owner, and so many times I wish to be an employee. Not having all the responsibility for everything, all the time - that's the main thing. My business is somewhat mature now, after 10 years, so income is solid, profit margin is great by now. I worked as an consultant a little, and loved it. Giving my best in a totally new environment, bringing a lot of ideas to the table, learning a lot - and in the end, if my suggestions are not pursued for whatever reasons, I don't really have to care, as it's not my responsibility. I know I did a really good job, but it's not my decision to make. Loved it. Can't do it anymore, though - got the little one living with me, that's enough work 😝
As for my co-workers - I have incentives for them as they get paid part of the profits above a minimum salary. So, the better the quality, the less things break, the more sales, the higher the efficiency, the more money we all make. That helps a lot.
Consulting is great. I was talking with someone today about being able to help people achieve better results, better quality of life, better whatever - there is personal value in it, as well as monetary value.
Currently I am trying to build my consultancy again, but it is a difficult time and every move forward seems to meet hurdles of the economy.
I wish you all the best for that! I thought I read one or two posts about the consulting you do :-)
