It seems like I have been faced with a number of decisions lately. I guess when you think about it, every day is just one big bundle of decisions strung together into a short twenty four hour period. Do I get up or stay in bed? Cereal or oatmeal for breakfast? Take the car or take the truck to work? The list is never ending.
Last week I wrote this post about Decision Paralysis. It's something I have struggled with for quite some time and I think a lot of us face it throughout our lives. There is always that genuine fear of making the wrong choice and then having to deal with the consequences.
Trust me, I've been in the position where I made the wrong choice. It's definitely no fun. The most notable one I can think of right now is getting @mrsbozz the Samsung Galaxy S21+ phone when she needed a new one. Then having to listen to her complain about how much the phone sucks every week for the past two years.
Okay, maybe not that, much, and I know she it's probably just something she says and she doesn't actually hate the phone. It still stings a little every time she says that because I was just making the best decision I could at the time with the knowledge I had available to me.

Decisions can really suck sometimes. This week, I was faced with a different kind of decision. It happened at work as is the case with a lot of these decisions. I guess that's the price you pay when you are the manager of a department.
The reason I say this decision is unique is because it's one of those ones where you know not a single person is going to be happy with it.
But you have to make the decision anyway.
The person I actually feel the most sorry for in this case is @mrsbozz. Since we work in the same place, she will likely be the one that hears the brunt of the negativity from this decision I made. They would never say it to my face. Heavens no, instead it will be passive aggressive emails and conversations with their colleagues in public spaces where anyone can hear their real feelings about what I just did.

By now you might be thinking that it's something fundamentally Earth shattering, but really it's not. Instead it's something pretty benign that I hope will make a huge difference down the road.
I implemented secure printing via a pin code system on the copy machines where I work.
This is honestly something we have needed for a long time now. My end users print way too much and hopefully this will make them think a little more before they click that print button. It's actually a smart move beyond that as well. No longer will teachers have potentially sensitive information sitting out in the open on the copier waiting for them to pick it up.
Likewise, no longer will someones 200 page copy job end up with someones print they sent from their classroom smack in the middle of it. In the grand scheme of things, this is a really good thing. Unfortunately, many users won't be able to look past the two extra steps they have to perform at the copier each time they want to retrieve their documents.
It's one of those things where this is the best decision no matter how you look at it. Infosec, resource management, etc, but it's still going to be one of the dumbest things I have ever done if you talk to the end users.
I was actually a little shocked the other day that I received an email from one person talking about how happy they are we are finally doing this. I didn't expect to get any of those even though I have explained the benefits ad nauseum to the end users. I replied back and expressed my immense gratitude.
It's a new dawn where I work, will my end users survive this massive change?
Will I?

The users will get used to it. At least they don't have to use common access cards plus PIN to make copies. It's no big deal. They will get used to it over time.
Yeah, we aren't going that crazy yet. Eventually one day I would like to implement allowances for them and if they go over they can't print or copy anymore, but I might actually draw physical violence if I do that!
Yeah unless the schoool is spending ungodly amounts on paper and ink I wouldn’t for now. Too much change at once could get you lynched
I agree with you. Making decisions are like a 24\7.It's a responsibility we need to make. There are decisions that can we can instantly decide and some are we need to contemplate or else we will regret the outcome or consequence.
For sure, it's almost like a full time job sometimes!
Haha. I couldn't agree more!
For @mrsbozz Samsung Galaxy S21+, just get don't think!
Her next phone will be a Pixel again. They are far superior.
As a Pixel 9 XL Pro owner and former Samsung fan ... I am with mrs bozz, sorry it didn't work out.
It's okay, as I told someone else, her next phone will be a Pixel. I have always loved mine. I also didn't mind my OnePlus phone I had before this one.
And we feel the pinch, living in a core family, where you have to take care of everything. I always loved to live in a joint family, but that never happened. May be when we grow older, there is a slight possibility of living with our kid, helping them ( we could not get it ourselves, but it will be great to pass the help to them), but again who knows !!!
End users will always adopt, human instinct, they will adopt anything, if no other option.
If that is what you want, I hope you can have that in the future. It seems you are very close with your kids, so they might be happy to share a space with you and their new family.
We will see in ten years how things turn out - cards say I am going to live alone :)
Best of luck no matter how it works out!
Initiating change must be super difficult in the workplace. When I worked an office job I saw how people rebelled against change, even if it made things better. I wonder why change is so scary for some people?
I don't know, but it is amazing how petty and pissy they will get. You would think I was taking money out of their pocket or something.
Secure printing seems like a good thing. People just like to complain.
That is true!
I initially thought your lead picture was
the Newcastle brown ale beer star!
Ah yeah decisions like that aren't fun. I have had my fair share of doing things like that over the years.
However, you would be surprised how much support you actually get is what I learnt.
I think eventually people are going to get used to it and they won't mind it so much, but I doubt they will ever thank me for doing this. I see what you are saying about Newcastle. That photo was taken in an area of Nashville called The Gulch.
Yeah they will get used it, people don't like change when it is perceived to be a hardship 🤣
For sure!
Decision making, almost a dance of life, whether right or wrong or inconvenient to some, never please everyone, not so?
Manager position is not meant to make everyone happy, cost of running certain equipment, you are answerable as to why!
Yes, you are very right on all counts. It isn't an easy job at all sometimes.
Only when people benefit are they happy, used to hate having to sort out unnecessary expenses.
Well they say even a broken clock is right twice a day so give the people a chance to get used to the changes. It is hard to be right all the time and know how you feel lol.
It's a bad attitude, but I think of it like I am there to do a job not to make friends.
Lolzz well we ladies love being ask what we like before getting us anything, you could have ask her the type of phone she love before proceeding, the choice is always ours ladies first 😏
I tried that. She said just get me something. She did the same thing with her car I bought a couple years ago. She said just bring home something.
Lolzzz maybe she love surprises we all do though. But the phone isnt bad in my opinion if its brand new. I think next time persuading her to tell you what she wants should be the next trick.
It's been a couple years now, so she is just about due for a new one. I have a feeling the battery life on the Samsung is starting to fade.
Well you can sell it off though and add to the money for a new phone, hey might do it tomorrow since its valentine 😀
haha, yeah, maybe.
It is not a big deal. We have been using this method ever since I can remember.

!LUV You're navigating a significant transformation at work—one that's clearly going to bring a lot of benefits, but also comes with its fair share of challenges. Change is often hard, especially when it comes to implementing new systems or processes. It's natural for end users to have reservations or even resistance at first, but your dedication to explaining the benefits is commendable. And hey, that positive email is a sign that at least some people are seeing the value! Hang it there, @bozz.

Yeah, I had a lady tell me today she hated it at first, but she understands it now. We will see how they feel in a couple of months.
