Tonight my loving wife made a nice warm pot of vegetable soup with some noodles in it. It went well with the cold nights we are having. Currently as I begin putting this post together it was 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6 degrees Celsius). She did this at my request as I have started coughing and feeling a chest cold coming on.
For some reason a hot bowl of soup is something I always desire on a coldnight, especially when I am not feeling well. I imagine that many feel the same way. However, my desire for this comes from a more deep seeded memory.
From my earliest days, I remember my mother making a hot pot of soup on cold winter days, especially when someone wasn't feeling well. Things were a little different then though. Because as a child I didn't care for soup or appreciate it on a cold night. Then again, I don't remember getting as chilled as I do these days when I was a child.
We didn't have much, but always had enough to put into a pot and make some soup. I remember it was usually a vegetable soup that would contain a beef or chicken broth. If we were lucky, it actually contained some hamburger or chicken.
Although I didn't care much for soup as a child, I always appreciated the effort my mother put into making it. Every last bit of it would be consumed until the pot was empty and all leftovers were gone. Nothing went to waste.
I think this made here very happy to see her children, especially when they were sick, be comforted by her efforts. In turn it made me happy, and possiblly even feel better, to see her happy.
So tonight, I eat my soup and think about my mother and the small things I miss baout her. Especially the love she would put into her soup on a cold winters night.
Thanks for reading,
Joe

Aww, that bowl of soup looks great! I love soup and we have it every day for lunch.
You are right Joe. There's a custom here, they say you need to have chicken soup, when you have a cold. I don't know if it has some special effect on cold, other than hydrating and the nutritional value, but it feels good for sure.
Get well my friend!
Thank you, I will let my wife know you said that it looked good.
We have the same old custom here as well. It probably came from Europe with settlers. Yes it does feel good for sure, epecially when it is cold.
You stay well to friend.

Oh my
This post is full of love and emotions.
I can see you enjoyed your soup with love.
There are a lot I neglected as well as a child when my parents were doing them for us, but I appreciate all of them right now.
And most times I used to wish my dad is still alive to see that I am appreciating these legacies right now.
Thanks for sharing, that was so lovely.
I did enjoy it and appreciated it.
Surely many of us didn't pay much mind to what our parents idd for us as children. We mostly don't come to really appreciate it until we get older.
There is no doubt in my mind that your dad feels the positive energy of your appreciation.
Yes that's true.
The older we get, the better we know
I think I was the same way. Soup was never something I craved as a kid, but now that I am older, there is just something about a warm bowl of soup that is magical!
It was magical last night as the temps dropped outside to like 13 degrees F.
