well maybe the right step for you is to not get engaged in it as far as online is concerned at least with people that you know. I know you peek at my meme dumps every now and then and I always preface those with how I left mainstream social media largely because of political infighting between people that I know have been friends for decades that are willing to toss all that out because of a difference of opinion that ultimately doesn't affect either of their lives. I think social media for the most part is extremely toxic and see no net benefit to them other than finding out the events that are going on in your area on a weekend or something like that.
I'm suspect you already feel this way so don't think I am being patronizing because I am not.
No worries, you are right, I already spend very little time on social media anymore. I used to, but these days it's just a lot of crap. My wife will ask me if I have seen something and it kind of feels good to say no I haven't been on Facebook all day!
