This morning I was reading about how Ukraine's forces used ATACMS ballistic missiles to strike deep behind enemy lines within Russia, and at once I was worried. I've been following the Ukrainie war since the invasion in 2022, but the main issue at hand isn't even the attack itself.
It's been other incidents that have happened the past few weeks.
Earlier last week, there was a report by Foreign Affairs on China rapidly increasing its nuclear deterrent. This is indeed troubling because it means non-proliferation was never really the status quo, and unfortunately we will likely see more nations with nuclear weapons, increasing the likelihood that one will be used in combat or, heaven forbid, stolen by nefarious entities and then used as weapons of terror on innocent civilians.
Now, Russia and North Korea have announced much closer ties; which certainly means that North Korea will have far more effective nuclear weapons (rumours have it that they are testing MIRVed ICBMs that can hit Washington DC) and with the US election looking increasing uncertain, no one should be surprised when Japan, South Korea and Taiwan start deploying nuclear weapons.
One cannot help but worry if humanity isn't doomed already. With the rising sea levels, higher global temperatures, increasing desertification and pollution, as well as rising levels of inequality and poverty; one wonders whether we would even survive the cataclysmic effects of a Third World War. Honestly, it's becoming increasingly doubtful.
Most of us aren't even worried about all these things. Increasingly polarisation of partisan politics, culture wars, fiery and extremist rhetoric from major political figures and looming distrust and outright hatred of other people have made me doubt if we could even sit down and work together to solve the problem of climate change.
Ultimately one ponders whether all this is just darkness before dawn breaks. Maybe I'm just fretting about nothing. I don't know.
But I know we all need to work together, irrespective of background, race, ethnicity, nationality or political differences, if we want a world worth leaving behind for others.
