Hail to the Hive!
When I think of 30 years it seems like an incredibly long time. It was 30 years ago that I was last in Egypt and on this return I have managed to do a few things I didn’t get round to doing all those years ago. Most notably seeing the Pyramids in the daytime ( as I only saw them at night last time) and scuba dive the red sea ( well Dahab and the Blue Hole ).
So while I was staring at these unreal structures and letting my mind drift off it was hard not to think back to those days and what followed, all the places I ended up going, the people I met and how much I have, well not changed so much as ‘developed’ into a much more rounded and hopefully wiser and more compassionate human being. Hmmm although this is highly debatable 😉.
But being here in Egypt all those years ago sent my life in a completely different direction. I had already been in and out of the Air Force and was still quite restless and after adventures in Israel and Egypt, working on farms and boats I set off bound for Eritrea and Ethiopia for no other reason than I wanted to and because I knew of nobody that had done so.
This whole adventure was enlightening and challenging and made me re evaluate myself on many levels and Africa itself leaves its mark on you, it gets under your skin in a way thats very hard to explain. Those that have traveled Africa will know what I mean. There’s nowhere quite like it left on the planet.
My life became a series of travels and adventures after this as I was never quite happy being anywhere doing normal day to day stuff and when Imstarted to learn scuba I had a kind of epiphany and realised ‘hmmm this will work, I can work and travel and do something I enjoy’ and that set off a whole new chain of events. Florida, Jamaica, Zanzibar, Belize, Mozambique, Philippines and yet being here again has me realizing that this is really where the wick of my adventures was well and truly lit.
So as I sit and watch the sun set and the pyramids get lit up for a show my mind drifts off to years gone by but then starts to think about what comes next……cos I ain’t finished yet………….not by a long chalk. I still think the best is yet to come!
