Maybe I'll have a little moment with them and remind them that they are responsible for getting that piece of paper at the end of the year. Or maybe point out that in the end, they will have to spend an entire year doing the bare minimum, just to come back next year to do it again.

Maybe also have them think about if this is really what they want to do with their lives? If they can't even bother to complete an assignment, how interested could they be?

I think a lot of them are here because their jobs send them. See we have a postgraduate programme for people already working in the field. You need the postgraduate to get a professional registration. Most of these students are 30+ and already working.

I think they are send to get the degree and the professional registration, and since they didn't decide for themselves "hey, I want to study again", they don't really put in much effort.

So I think you're right, they didn't choose to be here and that's making the process a lot more difficult for them.

Then that moment with them might help :) ... Regardless of how hard you try to make things better for them, in the end they're going to have to do the work!
