‘Hope is like salt, it doesn't feed, but it gives flavour to bread’ - José Saramago

Today, for my daily reflection, I've taken this quote from José Saramago - Portuguese writer and 1998 Nobel Laureate in Literature.

Anyone who reads this sentence, and if they are a Christian like me, will certainly remember the passage from the Bible in the Gospel of Matthew 5:13: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its flavour, how can it be restored? It will serve no purpose except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.’

Saramago's words have nothing to do with religion, as he was an atheist all his life and always distanced himself from religion. He even joked: ‘I'm an atheist, thank God’

But today I don't want to explain the religious nature of the phrase, but rather its more humanist side.

This past week, all of us, some more than others, felt a shiver run down our spines when we heard the president of a certain country say that he would consider using nuclear weapons from that moment on.

We then have a completely Dantesque and highly dangerous scenario for humanity, which leads to a decision from which there can be no return.

The pain and suffering that has been going on for more than 1,000 days in that region, not to mention the suffering that has been going on since 2014 with the seizure of Crimea, the suffering of families torn apart on both sides, the children who will never grow old, or who have been forced to grow old from one moment to the next when their homes, playgrounds, hospitals and schools are razed to the ground by constant attacks... not to mention those who have been forcibly taken to the other side.

In a world and at a time when we have little hope left, but what is in fact true is that hope can never be extinguished...

A saying goes: ‘Hope is the last thing to die’, and indeed many times we are so surrounded by darkness that we can't see even a glimmer of light in the background... But it's exactly at these moments that we must have the strongest hope we've ever had.

How and when do we have to hope the most? On a sunny day, when everything is going well around us, we're living in peace, and there are no apparent difficulties? Well, at that stage it's almost impossible not to have hope and not to see everything around us as sweet. It is precisely when we suffer hardship, or when we are beset by a bleak future, as is happening now, that we must try to believe in an alternative.

Let us then become a rock of salt in life, which ends up being our nourishment and that of others, and let us also allow ourselves to be salted by the hope of others.

Let's hope that the changes that will take place over the next few weeks will be beneficial for the Ukrainian people and for a free and fair Europe.

"A esperança é como o sal, não alimenta, mas dá sabor ao pão" - José Saramago

Hoje, para a minha reflexão diária, tomei esta frase de José Saramago - escritor português e Nobel da Literatura em 1998.

Quem lê esta frase, e se for alguma pessoa como eu que seja crente da religião Cristã, lembrará certamente da passagem da Bíblia do Evangelho de Mateus 5:13: "Vocês são o sal da terra. Mas, se o sal perder o seu sabor, como restaurá-lo? Não servirá para nada, exceto para ser jogado fora e pisado pelos homens."

Nesta frase que Saramago proferiu, em nada está relacionada com a religião, pois ele foi um ateu toda a sua vida, e sempre se distanciou da religião. Brincava até dizendo: "Eu sou ateu, graças a Deus"

Mas hoje não quero aqui explanar uma natureza religiosa da frase, mas sim a sua face mais humanista.

Nesta última semana, todos nós, uns mais que outros, sentimos um calafrio a descer a nossa espinha, quando ouvimos um presidente de um certo país referir que consideraria a partir daquele momento, a possibilidade de recorrer a armas nucleares.

Temos então um cenário completamente dantesco, e altamente perigoso para a humanidade, que se levar a uma tomada de decisão, da qual não se possa regressar.

A dor e o sofrimento que está a acontecer há mais de 1000 dias naquela região, e já não contando com o sofrimento que vem desde 2014, com a tomada da Crimeia, o sofrimento das famílias desfeitas, de um e do outro lado, as crianças que nunca irão envelhecer, ou que foram obrigadas a envelhecer de um momento para o outro, quando viram suas casas, seus parques infantis, seus hospitais e escolas a serem arrasados por constantes ataques... fora as que foram levadas, de forma forçada, para o outro lado.

Num mundo e num tempo em que pouco nos resta para termos esperança, mas o que de facto é verdade é que essa esperança não pode nunca ser apagada...

Um ditado diz que: "A esperança é a última coisa a morrer", e de facto muitas das vezes estamos tão rodeados por trevas, que não conseguimos ver se quer uma pequena luz no fundo... Mas é exactamente nestes momentos que devemos ter a esperança mais forte que alguma vez a tivemos.

Como e quando temos que ter mais esperança? Num dia de sol, em que tudo corre bem em nosso redor, que vivemos em paz, e sem dificuldades aparentes? Bem, nessa fase é quase impossível não ter esperança e não ver tudo doce em nosso redor. É justamente quando sofremos privações, ou quando somos assolados por um futuro negro, como agora está a acontecer, que devemos procurar acreditar em uma alternativa.

Tornemo-nos então uma pedra de sal na vida, que acaba por ser o nosso alimento e do outro, e deixemo-nos salgar também pela esperança do outro.

Esperemos que as mudanças que vão acontecer nas próximas semanas seja benéfica para as pretensões do povo Ucraniano, e de uma Europa Livre e justa.
