Art Talk: Fiori Boat

in Art Talk2 years ago (edited)

For 6 months I have been going to the Desert Botanical Garden regularly. Now I want to share pictures of pieces in Chihuly in the Desert that I have taken at different times of day, through different seasons and light.

Dale Chihuly
Fiori Boat, 2018
6½ x 17 x 10' (1.98m x 5.18m x 3.04m)
Blown glass and wooden boat
Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona

Fiori is Italian for flower. The boat is filled with so many amazing glass flowers.

According the the Chihuly website,

Chihuly first filled boats with glass pieces in Nuutajärvi, Finland, after tossing bulbous glass pieces into the river to let them float downstream. Chihuly’s team salvaged a rowboat from the river and filled it with a variety of glass forms. Chihuly has continued to revisit this concept ever since.

The boats are some of my favorite pieces. The last time Chihuly had an exhibition at this garden the boat was in the lake. It was very interesting to see it on the ground among the cacti and flowers.

Me and my dear friends at night in early January.

Me and the boat on a late afternoon in May.

This is the first piece you see as you enter the garden and is is really stunning.

That's a really interesting piece. The up close shots are quite beautiful. It's amazing that glass can look organic like that, like plants and flowers growing naturally.
Very cool!

I agree. I think that is one reason I am really drawn to Chihuly's work, it looks like nature and is often exhibited in nature and makes a really interesting contrast to the plants and buildings it is placed next to.
