Are Secondhand Finds Wise?

Thrift-shop-hopping ranks high on my favourite pastime, and it's even more pleasurable since I'm always mooring up in different towns across the UK. I love the fact that I wander in, take a look at random things, examine them and decipher if and how they could make my simple life on my narrowboat easier. Also, it's a convenient way for me to eliminate cluttering by donating items that I no longer use.

I get so excited when I enter thrift shops because there's always that unique item that pops out at you.
Like this little birdie. I love owls as they're known for wisdom, and seeing this eyeglasses case, it's like hearing, "It's owl good" to shop secondhand to save money."

The eye-catching colour makes it easy to spot in my handbag, and it was timely since I recently broke an eyeglasses case and never got around to replacing it.
This one is in immaculate condition.

Thrift Shop Price: £1.00
RRP: Approx. £15.00 - £20.00

💰A steal of a deal!

A folding trolley is a boater's must-have.

Our trolley was broken a few months ago when a truck driver accidentally reversed into it. We never got around to replacing the item because, cos most times we only pop to supermarkets for foodstuff and not necessarily hardware shops. Also, this folding trolley is more suitable for space constraints, compared to a wheelbarrow and it's just as efficient.

This one is fully intact with safety labels and the wheels looked barely used.

Again, it's in immaculate condition overall, it's sturdy with a solid stand for loading items on the trolley, the handle is a good size to hold, and the bonus is that it came with a bungee cord to secure the items while handling.

Thrift Shop Price: £4.00
RRP: Approximately £12.00 - £20.00

💰 A reasonable deal (considering that it's difficult to find a bungee cord alone for £4.00 in any shop here in the UK).

Ooh la la! An incense wooden box!

I had a similar item like this many years ago and I've been looking for a replacement for a while now. This was fresh on my mind because I brought home some of my favourite frangipani incense sticks from Bali, which gives the boat a lovely reminder and keeps my memories of walking into the hotel lobby smelling this particular scent, fresh.

The wooden box helps to alleviate mess, as the ashes fall directly into in while burning, it's safer and convenient for me to place it at different locations in the boat, or even outside of the boat on the grass on dry days. Also, I like that this one has two cavities for me to add some aromatic scented oil.

Having scents on the boat gives it a warm soothing pleasant ambience that complements the woody smell from my wood burner during these winter months.

Thrift Shop Price: £3.00
RRP: Approx. £7.50 - £20.00

💰A bargain, considering that it's solid wood.

Towns across the UK are saturated with Thrift and Charity Shops, that dictate the way many people shop and also the future of regular high street businesses.

I try not to get sucked into consumerism, while living simply and frugally, with essential comforts, so when asked the question if thrift and charity shops are a good idea, I'd say, it's 'owl' good for me.

Nice incense box. I love charity shops in the UK. There's always something cool and you have to be careful not to spend too much 🤣

Yes, I'm a lot more disciplined these days, but it has a lot to do with the fact that I don't have any space to store things:)))

Oooh I love both the owl and the incense box (looks so fancy! how's that only 3 pounds?!). Definitely wise in my book. Or maybe it's not so much that the second-hand finds are always wise, but that buying at full price is just dumb especially with this crazy inflation. :D Cool finds!

Thank you 😊
Yeah, the £3.00 was a definite steal. I see those wooden incense boxes at bohemian stores in some hippie towns and they charge ridiculous money for them... and I bet some of them are charity shop finds with HUGE mark ups.

Buying at full price is just dumb, especially with this crazy inflation

You are spot on there!
I walk around the small town I'm in and see so many closing down stores, especially jewellery shops, as many of the clothing ones are already gone:)

Good morning dear friend @millycf1976 how are you?
Second-hand shops are very convenient, not only do you save money, you can also find unique and unpublished things
You have made a beautiful and intelligent acquisition
Have a happy start to the week

Hey there @jlufer

Thanks for stopping by!
Indeed! I'm so pleased with all my purchases that I was able to use right away and will do daily.
Happy Sunday to you and have a fantastic coming week:)))

That makes two of us. We love thrift shops, markets, antique malls and online auctions. We are always hunting for vintage furniture.

Nice finds! That's a cool incense box. 👍

Thank you 😊

We are always hunting for vintage furniture.

Sometimes I see some amazing pieces that make me wanna cry cos I've goot no where to put them :)

Yeah I hear you. I often see so many chairs that I like, but one can only have so many chairs in their home. 😅

I saw a lovely wooden trunk that would be an excellent storage solution for my bow, but unfortunately, I couldn't get it cos it might not be the most practical thing for the weather and seasons :(

These are really cool if we are sincere and I am one of those who enjoy touring thrift shops when I really need something. Speak of electronics and some other stuff, I enjoy buying drift but a lot of people think of it as something else.

I enjoy reading as usual, cheers to a beautiful week...

Hey George!
Yes, some people still have negative perceptions of secondhand finds. I think it's false pride in many cases.
Some things are perfectly ok used.
Thanks for stopping by with your lovely comment and enjoy the rest of the weekend:)))

It's a good idea, donate and get good things at reasonable prices, things you really needed. I love the incense holder.

Greetings, @millycf1976.

Thanks for stopping by @nanixxx
Have a lovely day:)))

In brief: yesss!

That's one thing I love about the UK. charity and thrift shops are everywhere:)))

What rad finds! The price on the trolley is stellar, I bet you're much more excited to grocery shop now 😎

The incense holder and glasses case are great grabs too! I love cheesy puny stuff, I have a notebook that says Alpaca my bags 🤣 Perfect that it is so bright as well, as you said it's nice to be able to find things easily!

All around awesomeness 🙌 It was wonderful to see you posting here 🤗💗

Alpaca my bags

Haha! That's a cute one...
Yeah, I was so pleased with the findings. It's always worth popping into the shops when I'm in town:)))

Thanks @hivebuzz!
You do such an amazing job with the stats:)

Ha! I love it "It's owl good!" and I agree, I love owls myself.. I didn't take them with me from Budapest but I had very cool coffee mugs with owls and some other decoration which reminds me that I could replace by creating something myself. Thanks for the inspiration!

You found some good deals! We don't have proper thrift shops here, sadly. I really miss it! Closest thing to that are the weekly flea markets at another coast (we go there once a month more or less) or the rare opportunities with carboot sales, one is upcoming soon. Wish me luck :)
