    I lived in Alaska for 6 months a couple of years ago in a temperate coastal region - Ketchikan. Hated it! Economy is totally based on cruise ships. Local population is heavy into drugs, alcohol and smoking various substances. I found them to be low educated, low frequency people. Jobs are fishing and construction. Most everyone has been "incarcerated", as they say, or has a family member who is.
