Little Family Trip - The Frozen Lake

Hello lovely Hiveans !

It's been a while, since my last post. As you may know, I relocated in January with my family into a beautiful mountain range and started my new job in February. I was quite busy so far with getting settled and used to the new environment. Three weeks ago, I already showed to you the beautiful view from halfway up to the mountain top 🏔️ .. If you are interested, you can find it here .. Our latest weekend journey was to a nearby lake that we saw in the map and wanted to check out. Today I like to show you what we discovered when we arrived there 🙂

The Frozen Lake

The lake was not far away, just 3 km, so it was a nice destination for a little weekend trip. We are the kind of person that would never work on weekends. Luckily I don't have to 😉 .. These days are there for the family, for relaxing, couching, hiking or any other valuable family activities. We are planing to make one "Out to Nature" day every Sunday, and the last one had this lake as a destination 🌊

As you can see on the firs picture, the whole lake was completely frozen ❄️ .. Since we arrived here in the area, we had temperature below zero every night. In January even as low as -15°C. Lately it is only -2°C, but it seems that this had been enough to completely freeze the lake until now 😁

The lake was not big and had no moving water, so it's not surprising that it could freeze that thoroughly. We did not had that ever where we lived in Germany and it was the very first time for my little son to see such thick ice, so we had a lot of fun there and inspected it very closely for a while 👀 .. It looked soo beautiful and he even even wanted to venture onto the ice. I am sure that it would have hold us, as even the biggest stones that I thought onto the ice with force were not able to crush it. But I didn't want to teach him bad behaviour that one day could put him in danger if he is alone and gets that idea again .. I still remember how risky I was as a kid 😜

The snow in the valley is already gone and I don't expect it to snow again until next winter. Thus, the area is left in a brownish colour that contrast to the white ice surface. I am still wondering, how the spring and summer will look like here, but I am already expecting to have some awesome hikes these days 🏞️

Playing with Ice

After we examined the whole lake already, we found the part of the lake where the Ice seemed to be the thinnest. There we started to crush the surface again, which thick branches, stones and what else we could find. But we stayed unsuccessful. Besides some minor scratches, we were not able to break the ice. It was just to solid, but it was a lot of fun and for a while we just watched branches and stones sliding over the slippy surface ❄️

There was even a spot that featured rather glassy ice and we could see through it to the ground. This day I also found out that educating physics to children is a fruitless task and that stones are just far more exiting 🤣

IMG_20220213_123407.jpg

This frozen lake may not appear to spectacular to many people, but children can have sooo much fun with such simple things for such a long time. I nearly forgot that and was so happy to see him enjoying it so much. My wife had not that much fun, watching at ice for such a long time, especially not under her current circumstances 😜 .. When the time allows it again, I will bring some good old fashioned Road-Beers with us for her to compensate the effect of being to adult and foster some childishness 🤣

That's it for another impression of the beautiful Valais and one of our family Sundays out in Nature. This will be not the last time that we visit this place. Overall, there are many lakes here in the valley and even more up in the mountains to be found. But as it is only a 4 km away, it states a nice place for a quick visit in the future 😉

Thank You !

I hope you like this little frozen lake here and enjoyed it a bit, although I am sure that the little one definitely had the most joy with it 😊 .. I like to end this post with a picture that I took while we walked back after our lake visit.

Have you ever practiced that fishing where you make a hole in the ice then put branches so that the hole does not dry up and then insert a line with a fishing hook? looks so primitive and interesting! there are those who think that in these frozen environments you cannot fish but for thousands of years our ancestors have adapted to these beautiful environments! thank you for your nice photos

Oh no, I never ever did that, but I have heated about this Ice fishing 😉 .. I will keep an ear open during this year. If I hear that they are doing it here, I probably participate in one of their fishing tours ^^ .. so far I only know regular fishing 🎣 .. but I am no good at it it seems, or just super unlucky 🤣

I’m happy you and your family are settling in nicely. Thanks for sharing the trip to the frozen lake. I can see your son is enjoying this lovely weekend excursion.

Thank you 🤗 .. We are planing a weekend excursion now on every Sunday ^^ .. This frozen lake was quite new for us, but I assume that you are used to these sights already up there in the deep north 😁 .. is it that cold over there ?

We appreciate your work and your publication has been hand selected by the geography curation team on behalf of the Amazing Nature Community. Keep up the good work!

Thank you ☺️ .. He really loved it ! .. I am already excited to show him the whole beauty of what mountains have to offer, hehe 😁

I hope you will often go on trips with your family, it will be very fun for children to remember good memories with their parents, just like I still remember good memories with my father when I was little. time flies and I hope we can all enjoy the day with our beloved family for good memories @adalger

It's great that you and your family were able to enjoy that nice winter walk. Here in the tropics we don't have any of that, but I knew something similar when I was with my family in Millington Tennessee. Near the house there was a frozen puddle and the neighborhood children went skating. It was a new and exciting experience for my brothers and me. Thanks for sharing, blessings to all of you. 💙

Thanks for the visit @elentogether ^^

This area here is predestined for cold winters full of snow and ice ❄️ .. luckily we are fan of this climate. the tropic climate would be rather annoying for us 🤣 .. but it very beautiful ! .. If I ever encounter some other nice climate specific observations, I will remember to document them 😉

By the way, Nicanor took over the IW community and manages it from now on .. He already discovered your great insect posts there 👍 .. please go on with that nice blog of yours ;)

Thank you @adalger, that makes me a little sad, but I am glad that you are doing well with your family, in a new job and in that beautiful country.

Wow! That beautiful mountain range with blue sky!! Lovely but very cold day yo be out! I would do ice skating on the lake one day! Only 3 kilometers from your house!! I would go to this place in spring every weekend!

Hey there 🤗

Hehe, yes, it really close ^^ .. there are also ropes hanging in the trees, so I assume that in the Sommer, youngster go there for bathing and having fun, too 😜 .. I am already excited about the other lakes around here .. To he ones in the valley are easily accessible on short trips, whil we the ones in the mountain probably need some planning in advance 😁

Thanks for stopping by ^^ .. I wish you a great rest of the month over there .. stay healthy 👋

What a beautiful spot - loved seeing the mountains in the background!
Kids make it so much more fun for exploring with their wonderful sense of wonder!
