The Search for Crow-Bros Continues | 18 JUNE 2024

I apologize, I didn't make that meme and I also can't give proper credit - I found it somewhere online a long time ago, and then re-discovered it on my phone today...if it serves as any kind of karmic retribution, the Crow Bar has been so far an absolute flop.

HUNTING FOR CROW-BRO'S | 18 JUNE 2024

Although I don't post about it everyday, I do do it every (week) day. Every day that I am at work, if I get a lunch break, I am out by the lake - hoping to make friends with a murder. Today was of course, no exception...except that I tweaked my M.O.

I started out doing what I always do: I find a spot that seems to have lots of squirrels, I sit down, and I toss out peanuts until they get brave enough to come join me.

Here comes the first one, down the tree to see me!

...Getting warmer...

...But today I decided it might be more effective to take a proactive approach, so I walked part way around the lake. I didn't pull this picture of the map (Courtesy of AllTrails app) until I got back...if I had looked at it before starting off, I would have just walked the entire way around. I looked at a map in my navigation app when I reached that 0.3 marker and it looked like I was less than 1/10th of the way around, so I turned around and headed back...from now on though, I will just be doing the whole loop.

There were several spots where crows were either flying overhead, or perched in the branches above me. In all such locations, I gave a few brief calls and observed as they turned around to spot me...then when they saw me I would throw a handful of peanuts into the air. Today was by far the most exposure I've gotten, in terms of the crows seeing me lay out food for them. Every time one was flying over and I called, they turned around to check me out and see what's going on - so I must be at least doing something right (@corvidae ...you think this is possible, or am I most likely just creeping them out? 😅)

Typically in the past I've tried to stay put and get the crows to recognize the peanuts I'm dishin' out, but since this hasn't been working, I decided to play it cool today - I used a new three-part maneuver:

  1. Get their attention and make eye contact
  2. Dish out the snackies
  3. Keep on walkin'.

Although I heard almost no crows walking out to the turn-around point, I heard them almost constantly on my way back...so I'm hoping I stirred up some talk.

Here is a COOL dramatization of how I think it went:

...and if I'm right, then it will only be a matter of time until they are as interested in me as I am in them!

So I didn't technically meet any of them today/yet, but I do feel like I made progress, and potentially found a new approach that will help me build rapport with a greater number of them over the course of the summer.

In the meantime, I did see a cool osprey just hangin' out. This guy didn't mind me one bit, so I took a couple shots and headed back to work.

I think your three part maneuver is excellent! You can even stop and watch them from a good distance to see if they come down. If they do, keep your body and face turned sideways while you watch, as it's less threatening.

Fun fact: @robvector also plays flute in his car, or used to anyway.

There are two tin whistles in the back pocket of my car's passenger seat :)

Excellent, thank you! I feel like I’m getting closer :)

I checked him out and gave him a follow. Looks like his last post was a year ago, but I’m holding out to see if he responds. Not a lot of car-fluters out there, I appreciate you pointing me towards my flock!

Flock, lol!
