An encounter with a sloth

in WE ARE MOVING2 years ago

A few days ago, I went with my husband to visit some houses he needed to look at as possible film locations. One of them had a huge garden, and in one of the trees, there was this friend.

Its scientific name is Folivora, but they are commonly known as Pereza. In English, it is called Sloth. And they are native to Central and South America. Have you ever seen one?

Pereza1_Teresa.jpg

It is not the first time I have seen one. In the tropical rainforests around Caracas, there are many sloths. And it is not unusual to see one from time to time in an area of the city like where the house we visited is.

Some years ago, in one of the trees in front of our building, a Sloth lived for some time. My son was small at the time, and he used to call her Teresa, the Sloth (Teresa la Pereza).

Every time we went out of the house, we looked up at the tree, and there was Teresa the Sloth. But one day, one of the branches broke, and the Sloth fell. And the building admin called the fire brigade to rescue her.

I think they look cute, and I love to see them. But they can be a danger if they are near a road where cars are passing. A friend of the family once had an accident with a sloth that dented the whole bonnet of his car when it fell off when the branch of the tree it was hanging from broke.

Sloths love to spend their time hanging from trees with their heads down.

These mammals are known to be the laziest of mammals. They move very slowly and come down from the trees once a week to relieve themselves. And they don't need to do it more often because even in their digestive processes, these animals are lazy.

Pereza3_Teresa.jpg

This one, which we saw a few days ago, was eating very quietly. Sloths feed mainly on leaves. They move very slowly.

Some species of sloths have two claws, and others have three. This one, from what I could read, must be three-clawed because it has a white spot on its face. One characteristic of sloths is that they always seem to be smiling.

Our friend decided to climb more through the tree. So I took the chance to take a little video with which I made this gif.

Pereza.gif

Another curiosity is that they regulate their body temperature like cold-blooded animals such as reptiles. And that is why they are so slow in their movements.

So if you come here one day, don't be surprised to see one of these unique wild animals hanging from a tree.

Thank you very much for reading.

You're welcome @coquicoin! Have a nice day 😊🌹

Oh wow, it's very interesting that they live in the city :) I've never seen one personally and the way you describe them piqued my interest hehe. It must be fun watching them hang themselves like that from the tree branch, but as you said, can be dangerous too if they fall and you are right down there, loL!

Yep, there are many in the city. We have a lot of vegetation in some areas that were rainforests. It is fun watching them. Rodrigo loved the one that was always near our home, when we went out the first thing we did was to see if the sloth was there, hehe It's bad luck if one falls on your car or something like that and they sometimes get hurt, but there are groups now that rescue them.

That's great, they co-exist with people. And yes, what a bad luck if one falls on someone's car. And so nice that they are protected too with groups rescuing them when they get hurt.

Yes, they co-exist. They are not friendly but neither aggressive. I don't think they like to be touched.
Good night to you sis 😊

Amazing how you managed to capture it at the right time and in its natural habitat. A beauty.

Thank you :) I would have loved to have been able to capture it closer to see his face better. But it was too high in the tree.
Thank you for stopping by! :)🦥

Amazing and fascinating! Much of that, I didn't know - about their physiology and habits. I wasn't aware, either, that they were so habituated.

Also, you - he/she - have completely explained and demonstrated what slothful means!

I love to see them in the trees. And sometimes I'm so busy that I'd like to be a sloth for a while and see life hanging on a branch. 😂🦥
Have a lovely day 🤗

Good Picture

Thank you!

Have never seen one personally though and it is my first hearing about them, I better go read and check them out.

Hehe! We learn something new every day, right?;)
Thank you so much for stopping by :)

Omg I'd love to see a sloth 🦥🦥🦥

Jeje! they look cute ;)

Never seen one in real life. But know about them. How cool is this, so awesome you captured it. 😎
Yes, they are slow and lazy in many ways. Sad they do come close to roads and houses. I understand the dangers.
Thanks for sharing @coquicoin 😁👋🏻

You are welcome, Jackie 😄
They are close to houses and streets in slightly wooded areas. Here there is a lot of vegetation, and most of the sloths, at least the ones here, are harmless. It's really bad luck if one clashes in your car, though it had happened, they often do more damage to themselves. And recently, I heard of some initiatives to protect them and of organizations that are in charge of rescuing them and returning them to their natural habitat. 🦥 😊

Ooo that’s great to hear, that they help them back to their habitats. 🥰😎

Yes, I can imagine, poor animals, they will be hurt.

Yep. Have a great day 😊😄😎🦥

Thanks and you too @coquicoin 👋🏻☀️

😄😊🪴🦥

That was a wonderful post, I have only seen a sloth on the tv. but what an interesting animal. Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed the read.

They are interesting indeed 🦥
Thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it :)

Never seen that kind of animal before.. Isn't it scary to go near it? 😅

Oh no! They're not really scary. They are not aggressive. And if they try to attack you they are so slow LOL you can run away and they won't catch up with you.😂

The sloth looks so cute. I had not seen one before as I don't think there are sloths in Borneo.

They are native to the Americas, so I don't think you'll have some there. Thank you for stopping by!

Ive never seen this one coqui.. I'm amazed with your shots, nice! Pee weekends to you.

Thank you, Jean! I hope you had a good weekend! 😄🦥

Another thing for our list, you to show me a sloth. They are fricking awesome Super Eli.
What a thrill that would have been.
Only relieving themselves once a week, darn how lazy is that🤣

Already added to the list, Super Ed! ;) Awesome is the perfect word to describe it. They look like big stuffed animals with smiling faces. I sometimes, except for the once a week relief thing 🤣🤣 would like to be a sloth for a while especially on super hectic days haha.

Yes they remind me of me, a slow methodical amble, but always getting done what needs to be done jaja
Oh I love it Super Eli!

Jaja! So I can give you a new name Ed el perezoso 😆
Happy Sunday Super Ed 😄😊🦥

Oh are they nice? I want to pet them. They're cute.

Hehe! They are not aggressive, but I don't think they like to be touched. However some time ago I read of a couple that rescue ones in danger and have some as pets, hehe

ohhhh 😮

😄😊🦥

Que linda es esa perezosa, me hiciste acordar de un peluche que me regaló un novio, no se si era un mensaje encriptado,🤣😅 pero era hermoso. Me gustò el gif, luego me enseñas como hacerlo.

no se si era un mensaje encriptado

🤣🤣🤣
El gif lo hice con una app llamada giphy. Es muy fácil hacerlo en esa aplicación con un video cortico o con una foto Live. Feliz domingo, amiga

😀Gracias, feliz domingo.

😊😄🌹

It's weird but I've never come across any such animals at any point. Perhaps because I live in the city.. all we have here are tall buildings and raging cars. Lol!

Hehe! I live in a city too, but there are many wooded areas. And I think also you don't have sloths there since they are native to the American continent. Have a great Sunday!

Oh this is amazing. I have never seen a sloth and after reading this post I would really like to see them. Sometimes I feel lazy, I’m lazy but unfortunately I can’t enjoy laziness like these cute animals. 😊

Haha! I also sometimes feel like one 🦥 . Thank you for stopping by amiga 🤗

I miss your posts a lot, I can hardly find some time to read, I am pressured by children. 😊 I always feel good after reading your post, you are an inspiration. 😊

Thank you dear Jelena for your sweet and kind words, I know what the pressure is with small children and now I know what it is with a big child hehe. But we must enjoy every stage. I too have been very busy these last few days and with little time to read and comment but we do what we can.
Un gran abrazo, amiga!🤗
