The selection of images that I bring you this time, made me remember beautiful times while I was growing up with my parents and siblings in the small eastern city of Carúpano. In our garden, it was always present and although it was not very much to my liking, my dad loved to prepare it in salads, dressed in a very simple way, just vinegar, salt and oil. Anyway, I have always known it, in my homeland they call it Berro de Sapo and they attribute many healing properties to it, but we will talk about that later.
Berro de Sapo, no es el único nombre con el que se le conoce a esta planta, de forma común, Alumbre, Hierba del Sapo, Hierba de Plata, Siempre Fresca, y Corazón de Hombre, son otros nombres que se le atribuyen. Por otro lado, a nivel científico a esta planta herbácea, se le conoce como Peperomia Pellucida. Pertenece a la gran familia de las Piperaceae, la cual agrupa unos doce géneros que en total agrupan 3000 especies. Esta especie del género Peperomia es nativa de América y del África Tropical, aunque en la actualidad se encuentra significativamente diseminada en todas las zonas tropicales alrededor del mundo.
Cress of Toad is not the only name by which this plant is known, in a common way, Alumbre, Grass of the Toad, Silver Grass, Always Fresh, and Heart of Man, are other names attributed to it. On the other hand, at a scientific level, this herbaceous plant is known as Peperomia Pellucida. It belongs to the great family of the Piperaceae, which groups about twelve genera that in total group 3000 species. This species of the genus Peperomia is native to America and Tropical Africa, although at present it is significantly spread in all tropical areas around the world.
Esta herbácea anual, posee raíces, que se desarrollan a poca profundidad, caracterizándose por un crecimiento de forma erguida, logrando, su suculento y ramificado tallo alcanzar alturas entre 15 y 45 cm. Sus carnosas y brillantes hojas verde, de aproximadamente 1,5 a 3,5 cm. de largo y 1,5 a 3 cm. de ancho, crecen dispuestas de forma alterna. Poseen la peculiar forma de corazón, razón de que en algunos lugares sea conocida con el nombre de Corazón de Hombre. Su inflorescencia, las podemos apreciar durante todo el año en forma de una espiga simple que mide entre 2 y 5 cm de donde emergen unas ínfimas florecillas. Por otro lado, sus diminutos frutos en forma de bayas elípticas, cuando mucho llegan a alcanzar de diámetro 0,6 milímetros.
This annual herbaceous plant has roots, which develop at a shallow depth, characterized by an upright growth, achieving, its succulent and branched stem to reach heights between 15 and 45 cm. Its fleshy and shiny green leaves, approximately 1.5 to 3.5 cm. long and 1.5 to 3 cm. wide, grow alternately. They have the peculiar form of heart, reason why in some places it is known with the name of Heart of Man. Its inflorescence, we can appreciate them throughout the year in the form of a simple spike measuring between 2 and 5 cm from which emerge tiny flowers. On the other hand, its tiny fruits in the form of elliptical berries, at most reach a diameter of 0.6 millimeters.
Como ya les mencioné, es una planta comestible y se puede consumir tanto cruda como cocida y curiosamente si la machacamos desprende un aroma similar al de la mostaza. Además, son bastante conocidas sus propiedades curativas en el ámbito de la medicina herbal, destacándose sus efectos antinflamatorios, analgésicos, antibióticos y antimicóticos. Sus usos van, desde consumir su jugo como bebida energizante, pasando por la realización de infusiones y decocción, para tratar la artritis, resfriados y problemas urinarios. Además, lo recomiendan para tratar el acné, aplicándolo como enjuague facial o triturando la planta y realizar cataplasmas en la zona afectada. Incluso recomiendan incluirlo en nuestra dieta en forma de ensaladas, ya que al parecer ayuda a disminuir los niveles en sangre de colesterol malo.

Interesting plant and many uses ^^ .. I don't know if it is just the picture quality but the leaves look kind of waxed 😀
Hello @adalger it is always nice to have you visit my blog. It really is a very useful plant. Its appearance is very peculiar, its leaves and stems retain water, and are covered by a really shiny looking film, even at first glance they seem covered with oil, but when you touch them it is not like that, it is their own shine.

Es lamentable que no la tengan en su jardín @talentclub, algunos la concideran que es muy sabrosa en ensalada, por lo menos a mi papi le encanta. De hecho, me he propuesto tratar de comerla, por los beneficios que tiene, según lo que leí. Saludos y bendiciones a todo el equipo.

Siempre he escuchado del jarabe de berro, que aquí en mi país lo usaban mucho para tratar la tos y males parecidos, pero confieso que NUNCA había visto fotografías de esta planta. No sé si es lo mismo, pero resulta cuando menos interesante...

Hola @gaboamc2393, gracias por tu visita, es posible que se trate de la misma planta, porque según lo que investigué, en algunos lugares la usan para calmar la tos, pero no te lo podría asegurar. Esto, porque aquí en Venezuela también se usa otra planta llamada berro, es muy popular al igual que en gran parte del mundo, ya que, es usada a nivel gastronómico en ensaladas principalmente.
