La hierba que les traigo en esta oportunidad, es conocida a nivel mundial, ya que, ha sido cultivada por la humanidad desde hace milenios para ser usada en distintos ámbitos. Algunos conocerán a esta hierba aromática como Albahaca, Alhábega, Basílico o quizás otro nombre menos común, pero de seguro habrán probado, al menos una vez. Son innumerables sus usos a nivel gastronómico y medicinal, pero estoy segura que no muchos han tenido la oportunidad de apreciar sus delicadas flores.

The herb that I bring you in this opportunity, is known worldwide, since it has been cultivated by mankind for millennia to be used in different areas. Some of you may know this aromatic herb as Basil, Basilica, Basilico or perhaps another less common name, but surely you have tried it at least once. Its gastronomic and medicinal uses are innumerable, but I am sure that not many have had the opportunity to appreciate its delicate flowers.

Así que, en esta ocasión en la medida que les cuente un poco sobre esta hierba perteneciente a la familia de las lamiáceas les mostraré unas hermosas tomas de la planta que de mi hermana. Por suerte, mientras estuve en la ciudad de Maturín en casa de mi hermana, tuve el placer de conocer la inflorescencia de esta hermosa aromática y muy útil planta. Me llamo mucho la atención su espiga con múltiples y pequeñas flores blancas, aunque por lo que investigue también existen variedades donde las florecillas son de color violeta.

So, on this occasion as I tell you a little about this herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family I will show you some beautiful shots of the plant that belongs to my sister. Luckily, while I was in the city of Maturin at my sister's house, I had the pleasure of knowing the inflorescence of this beautiful aromatic and very useful plant. I was very struck by its spike with multiple small white flowers, although from what I researched there are also varieties where the flowers are violet.

Como pueden observar en las imágenes, de las espigas florales emergen diminutas flores de forma tubular y que en el caso de la variedad que les muestro son de un color blanco puro. Un detalle interesante sobre este género, es que el pistilo y los cuatro estambres de sus pequeñas flores, se apoyan sobre el labio inferior de la corola o corona. Esta es una característica que diferencia a las plantas de Albahaca de los otros miembros de la familia Lamiáceas.

As you can see in the images, from the flower spikes emerge tiny flowers of tubular shape and that in the case of the variety that I show you are of a pure white color. An interesting detail about this genus is that the pistil and the four stamens of its small flowers rest on the lower lip of the corolla or crown. This is a characteristic that differentiates Basil plants from other members of the Lamiaceae family.

Es una planta perenne anual, perteneciente al género Ocimum, propio de climas tropicales, conocida a nivel científico como Ocimum Basilicum. Se supone, que es originaria de las regiones tropicales del sureste asiático y del centro de África, sin embargo, sus distintos usos, le ha permitido alcanzar la fama mundial. Sus bondades culinarias y medicinales, aunado a su facilidad de cultivo han hecho que hoy día se pueda hallar en cualquier rincón del mundo. Es muy común encontrarlas en invernaderos, huertos o simplemente sembradas pequeñas masetas en jardines familiares, ya que, es además una planta muy decorativa.

It is an annual perennial plant, belonging to the genus Ocimum, typical of tropical climates, known scientifically as Ocimum Basilicum. It is supposed to be native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Central Africa, however, its different uses have allowed it to achieve worldwide fame. Its culinary and medicinal properties, together with its ease of cultivation, have made it possible to find it in every corner of the world. It is very common to find them in greenhouses, orchards or simply planted in small pots in family gardens, since it is also a very decorative plant.

La característica fragancia de las hojas de la Albahaca, junto a su penetrante, dulce y fresco sabor, ha convertido esta hierba en una de las más famosas a nivel mundial y en el icono indiscutible de la gastronomía italiana. Particularmente, en la cocina mediterránea, es un ingrediente muy apreciado, debido su versatilidad, pudiéndose ingerir de manera fresca tanto cruda, como cocida, además, en forma de especia al deshidratarla. Combina con una gran variedad de otros ingredientes, permitiendo, crear una gran diversidad de maridaje y recetas diferentes, en platos salados. En la actualidad incluso, con las nuevas tendencias culinarias, cada vez es más frecuente su uso en distintas preparaciones de platillos dulces.

The characteristic fragrance of basil leaves, together with its penetrating, sweet and fresh flavor, has made this herb one of the most famous worldwide and the undisputed icon of Italian gastronomy. Particularly in Mediterranean cuisine, it is a highly appreciated ingredient, due to its versatility, being eaten fresh, raw or cooked, as well as in the form of a spice when dehydrated. It combines with a great variety of other ingredients, allowing to create a great diversity of pairings and different recipes in savory dishes. Nowadays, even with the new culinary trends, its use in different preparations of sweet dishes is becoming more and more frequent.

A nivel general, no es una planta muy grande, normalmente mide entre 40 y 60 cm de altura, sin embargo, curiosamente las plantas de un municipio de la provincia española de Valencia, son la excepción. Bétera, es este paraje valenciano, donde las plantas de Albahacas sobrepasan los estándares, llegando a medir más de 2 metros de alto y hasta 4 metros de ancho. Su siembra, es parte de una tradición en honor a la Virgen de la Asunción, las singulares plantas son ofrendadas a la virgen durante las festividades de “Les Alfábegues”. Por otro lado, los métodos de cultivo utilizados para obtener semejante dimensiones, resultan ser, el secreto mejor guardado por los pobladores de esta región.

In general, it is not a very large plant, normally measuring between 40 and 60 cm in height, however, curiously the plants of a municipality in the Spanish province of Valencia, are the exception. Bétera, is this Valencian place, where Basil plants exceed the standards, reaching more than 2 meters high and up to 4 meters wide. Sus ovaladas hojas, se dispones de forma opuestas a lo largo de sus finos tallos, pueden varias en cuanto a su ancho y en algunos casos pueden ser dentadas. En lo que respecta a su color también es variable, se pueden encontrar en distintas tonalidades de verde, llegando a encontrarse algunas variantes en un morado muy intenso. Una de las variedades más populares por sus anchas hojas y su fresco y dulzón es la conocida como hoja de lechuga, por otro lado, las hojas de las plantas de zonas mediterráneas normalmente tienden a ser alargada y finas. Pero, en estas zonas también se pueden encontrar plantas de albahacas de hojas moradas o púrpura. El sabor también es muy variado, va desde sabores muy ligeros frescos y dulzones, pasando por sabores anisados, incluso semejantes al regaliz, hasta sabores más intensos que inclusive tienden a ser picantes.

En cuanto a su uso, los más conocidos son a nivel culinario, pudiéndose crear una amplia gama de opciones de platos por demás deliciosos donde el límite es la creatividad de chef. Pero esta planta también tiene grandes bondades para la salud, por ejemplo, es genial para ayudar en el proceso de digestión y para ayudar a disminuir dolores y malestares generales. Por otro lado, también se le atribuyen propiedades antiespasmódicas, diuréticas, antibacterianas, antinflamatorias, antisépticas, cicatrizantes. Incluso en algunos lugares la combinan con otras plantas con propiedades expectorante y mucolíticas para combatir enfermedades respiratorias.
