Helloo, so few days ago I decided to go for a walk in forest near park Maksimir. We students and our professors call it forest Dotrščina. Sometimes we do pratical parts in these woods like identification of the species.
This place is actually Memorial cemetery and park of the Dotrščina revolution, it spreads between park Maksimir and mountain Medvednica.
When I came here it was cloudy and windy but surprisingly warm. This is the entrance in forest and afar in photo you can see the monument.
I really like this times when everything is green and full of life. While I was entering the forest I forgot about boring city traffic and started to feel the nature, sounds and colors in it. 🌳☺️
Since it was windy the sound of rustling leafs were really relaxing.
This leafs belong to Sessile oak ( Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl. ).
This species is very valuable in Croatia because of their high quality.
First I saw this slug feeding on nettle.
In this forest you can found three dominant species. They are Sessile oak, then Common hornbeam and European beech. Dominance varies with soil conditions and the amount of sun in a particular part of the forest.
This pretty flower is Herb Robert ( Geranium robertianum L. ). It can grow in deep shadow places and also on sunny ones.
Yellow one is Wall Hawkweed ( Hieracium murorum L.)
Butterwort ( Sanicula europaea L. ). This plant is also a medical plant and it is protected in Croatia.
Very common one ( in almost all Europe ) is Wild Strawberry ( Fragaria vesca L.). Wild Strawberry have a very large ecological niche.🍓
White flowers that didn't bloomed yet, but soon they will, are from the species called White Helleborine ( Cephalanthera damasonium / Mill./ Druce ).
Then I saw that the clouds look like it might rain soon. Good luck was that I had an umbrella in my backpack. ☔ And that is exactly what happen few minutes later, I just heard rain getting closer from the depths of forest.
BUT THAT DIDN'T STOPPED ME FROM TAKING PHOTOS.
With umbrella in one hand and mobile phone in other I continued looking around and enjoyed the sound and smell of rain. 😅
This species is very common for oak forests. It is called Small periwinkle ( Vinca minor L. ) and it is used in decorative purposes, there are a large number of horticultural forms of these species.
From both sides of forest road was this plant with branched stems.
I had a hard time in taking the shot of this flower. It was a plant named Pea ( Lathyrus niger L. ). It is usually common for warm and bright forests. Seeds are edible.
For this one I am not sure but I think it is Hedge bedstraw ( Galium mollugo L.)
This one is White Wood-rush ( Luzula luzuloides (Lam.) Dandy et Wilmott )
I said that I had an umbrella, but the truth is that I had two umbrellas, second one was the forest canopy.
In this picture you can see two types of trees, on the left side with the whole leaf of the sawn edge is a hornbeam and on the in the middle with the lobed leaf is an oak.
Young leafs on Field maple ( Acer campestre L. ). This tree is particularly frequent in forests of Common hornbeam and Sessile oak.
It was raining for 20 minutes and then the sun came up and leafs were glowing from drops of rain just like this Common ivy ( Hedera helix L.) on the ground.
We all know this one.. Bairnwort ( Bellis perennis L. )
This one is Owl Head Clover ( Trifolium alpestre L.) .
I am not sure for this one either but I think it is Rumex obtusifolius L.
This one small cutie is Thyme-leaved speedwell ( Veronica serpyllifolia L.)
This is flower of Wood Avens ( Geum urbanum L.). Yellow color is so strong and also after blooming the flower petals fall off easily.
And this one is the fruit of this plant, tiny nut. Fruits catch on animal fur and that is the way they spread in areas. Very smart. 🤓
At the end I went into the forest for little bit before I go home.
I found an area with this Coral root ( Cardamine bulbifera (L.) Crantz) but I couldn't find one with flowers.
This ellipsoidal black and purple dumplings are breeding buds (bulbillus) from which the plant reproduces vegetatively.
Orchard Grass ( Dactylis glomerata L.) is also very common not only in Europe but also in Asia and northern Africa. This species is usually growing in warm and bright forests.
This lady is Heath Speedwell ( Veronica officinalis L. ). The flowers are bright blue or bright purple. Also a medical plant and protected in Croatia.
Last one is Common dogwood ( Cornus sanguinea L.). We already showed you this one in our previous posts, but here we have white adorable flowers starting to bloom.
After this walk I continued my day more energetic and happier. Nature really is the best terapy for everything.💓🌳🌱
Hope you like the post and enjoy your day. All photos were taken by Ana😀
