Woodpeckers make a superb round hole, so many other animals in forests use the hole eventually. Nice find and great memories from your childhood.

Busy birds about in the wooded area, yes they make lovely homes then the squirrels and other animals or birds come use them once woodpeckers have finished living in the nest.
