Spider Hunting Wasp vs Rain Spider
I am not a walking encyclopedia, research and write about what made me excited enough to go head on into battle with this aggressive wasp. Not quite a battle, although beautifully coloured wasp definitely stands it's ground, lets see why!
Spider was paralyzed by the time I noticed the action of the wasp dragging this up a wall, dropped once went down to retrieve then persisted single minded on it's journey.
Back up the wall over the trellis into the Natal Plum down into a dark damp corner on the ground next to the wall around the corner. Could have walked through the opening, turned a sharp left and been exactly where she wanted, perhaps she enjoys showing off her strength going uphill first!
Looking at both species one can see equal in sizing, both big insects go! Wasp has the advantage of flying in to sting....
Immobilized by poisonous sting before being dragged to the nest where a single egg will be laid in the spiders abdomen, wasp will seal the nest entrance and leave, I know where it's hide hole is and it sure is safe!
Large spiders will be host to future female wasps, smaller spiders to male wasps, how absurd nature is and wonderful.
Approximately ten days larva will eat its way out of the spider, spin a cocoon in silk and remain dormant until right temperature before emerging as an adult. Oh dear she dropped him, quick catch a snap!
When next you out in the garden then witness a wasp doing a tango back and forth, look carefully around she may be hunting a spider for her next stage in creation of life for her species. Wasp standing her ground between me and the spider, ready to take me on, no fighting, keep going dear!
Rain Spider - Palystes
Twenty eight Palystes species occur in central, eastern and southern Africa with 13 resident in South Africa Source
I would narrow this one down to Palystes superciliosus is the most common and widespread species of the genus and ranges from Kwazulu-Natal westwards to Mpumalanga, North West, Limpopo, Eastern and Western Cape, (found in same source of information above.
Spider Hunting Wasp - Tachypompilus ignitus
Spider wasp is found in Southern Africa, recorded from South Africa and Zimbabwe. These wasps are about 45 mm in length. They are largely black with orange antennae, orange dital parts of the legs, and largely orange wings, which are dark at the base and tip. Source

As a child, I could catch spiders with my bare hands, not so big, however. Now I'm afraid of almost any spider that I can see "teeth" with my poor eyesight. Yes, I know that the size of a spider does not indicate its danger to humans, but fears are irrational.
Obviously, I should be happy for the wasp in this situation, because she defeated my fear. But, a creature that lays an egg in another creature... it's hard to be on his team.
I didn't know this fact, it's simple and amazing at the same time.
Looking back on our childhood it's a miracle most of us survived. I run quicker from the wasp than the spider, most wasps sting, sting, sting don't stop.
Logically thinking, it is the females one must be wary of...., mosquito bites normally the female, spiders female averagely larger might eat the male when the party is over, wasp is as bad a the rhino they plunge into whatever gets in the way.
Now we know the plump spiders are for female wasp, skinny spiders grow the males up, not really a fair innings for the male wasps.

You're damn right! it seems to me that it was a completely different person in childhood, and not me. Now, before I lie down on the grass in the park, I ask myself, "Do they treated it with tick chemicals?". Romance is leaving...
!LOLZ one cannot question every time you outdoors what is around, or we would lock ourselves up permanently. Never lay on the grass, check around a rock then sit on the rock instead.

Cool shots of them and informative I never knew that wasps laid there eggs inside spiders so interesting
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)
Some very strange things happen in nature, hopefully the spider had already laid offspring to carry one it's species.
Nature is indeed strange and amazing
We have a variety of wasps, never seen action like this, no time to become bored so much to see in life!
Wow those wasps look quite similar to the tarantula hawk wasps we have over here. I've seen them going into tarantula dens. We even tried saving a tarantula that was hanging around for years after a wasp sting. Fortunately it survived as the wasp wasn't able to lay eggs in it.
Sounds about the same, using similar tactic to ensure survival in species. I don't interfere in nature, it really is a case of eat or be eaten.
Your wasp is the largest by what I read, packs a nasty sting as well.
Too nature, have a wonderful weekend.
We grew too attached to our pet outside tarantula to let it be harmed by the wasp lol. It ended up living a good 10 years before a toad finally took over its burrow.
Wow that is fascinating and very long living, wonder how long these wasps live to carry on getting spiders for their young?
Rain spiders lifespan is only two years here and they help keep other insect populations under control.
I think the wasps only live one year.
Logical thinking from larva to flight then back through cycle again, livelong in different forms. No idea how long wasp lifespan is in flight, possibly seasonal.
Yay! 🤗

Interesting photos and video. And you're right when you write in one comment that it's about survival. Nature does not care what is good or is not good (from a human point of view). Nature makes sure that as many species as possible survive :-)
Each plays a separate roll, it was fascinating to watch her at work! When something is hunting one must respect their inbuilt drive for survival, watch at a distance no matter how big or small it is.
Thanks for visiting @bucipuci have a lovely Saturday, it is raining and cooler now down in Durban today at 19C, my kind of weather!
If we want to understand and protect nature, we should "condemn" to a mere state of observers :-)
With us, the sun alternates with rain and snow :-)
Have a nice weekend :-)
Spectator with most things out of respect. Humanity is not doing a good job at much, perhaps watching nature we may learn.
Hopefully
How cool is that - exciting story and the video gave it a perfect ending. Laying the egg into the spider's abdomen sounds like a horror movie, but it isn't, I know.

Sounds horrific to humans, very clever insuring next generation has food for growth.
Sure hope you found a sunny spot and climbed a hill to see landscapes, are out enjoying yourself now!
Cool 19C here with rain, will go through photography and keep out of mischief, perhaps even get down to do bookkeeping that is waiting forever!

Good morning Joan,
I have been offline for the whole weekend, so I am sorry for my late reply.
Winter has come back to say goodbye with all kinds of weather. Saturday I have had rainstorms, thunderstorms, massive hailstorms and also quite some snow storms, but no sun. Had to turn back from 2 mountain passes because of the snow and my detour home took me 3 hours longer.
Sunday I had sunshine but it was pretty cold ... all in all a nice weekend 😁
Hope you have had a nice weekend too, wishing you a wonderful Monday 🌞

Driving on snow makes fun, but you need good winter tires. Mine are at the end of their life, so if the snowy roads get too steep I can only hope to be able to turn around 😁 !LOLZ
Hope the floodings don't get too bad and you still have a good time in the "cooler" weather that we would call pretty warm. Here it has 14 C today and we are on the balcony barefoot and in t-shirt 😅

Even night time we don't get to 14C at the moment.
Devastating cyclone passed through we have been without electricity and water since Monday, no complaints we still have a roof over our heads which many don't have.

Always something new and surreal to learn Joan. I never heard of a wasp laying an egg in the spider’s belly- a surrogate womb.
What I loved is big spider for big girls, little spider for male offspring, sounds like nature gives us a break sometimes 🤣, was so interesting to watch her at work.

yup!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Quite a show and wealth of information you brilliantly documented for us! 🐝🕸🕷
Mildly surprising to witness event, not something we see everyday 😃
How fascinating to watch a wasp catch a spider and then lay an egg inside the spider. I had no idea and am very intrigued at the whole process. And even more interesting is that spiders have the reputation of being the hunters.
Thanks @joanstewart for a most intriguing post.
Super excited watch the event unfurl, nature is eat or be eaten I never expected almost equal size. Wasp has element of surprise being able to fly.
Thanks for visiting and enjoying, now to have a lovely week ahead. Our region now flooding with excess rain since Friday still going another two days according to weather apps.
Nature is simply amazing and being lucky enough to catch this on film is really cool. Great video, it shows the strength of the wasp as it makes its way to its hiding place.
Oh she took such a long way around, definitely has a great place where she finally closed up, well protected.
Wow!!! Definitely a fascinating creature, I just hope the spider is no longer aware or in pain. She was actually going to fight you to keep her prize, definitely a fierce defender of her future little ones, even if she does fly off ♥️
!PIZZA !ALIVE !LOL
Ensuring her next generation, hopefully the spider had already completed laying it's next generation before being nailed.
Yeah, such a fascinating cycle :) I'm thankful that both are too small to include us in it though.
