At the far edge of the Milky Way galaxy is a small, insignificant solar system. And on the third rock from the sun is a continent called Africa. And at the far edge of Africa, way down south just before Antarctica, is a small seaside holiday town called Plettenberg Bay. And in the centre of that town is Central Beach.
It's way out on the edge of the world, yet it's simultaneously the center of the universe. Because wherever you are is the center of your universe. After all, where is the center of a circle that has an unlimited circumference?
It's whale season here on Plett, as the locals call it. And Central Beach is where intrepid tourists and whale watchers can hire an ocean safari tour. The boat will take you out into the bay where you can float up close to the majestic whales and their newborn young just a hundred meters off shore.
Central Beach is also home to the iconic Beacon Isle hotel, which is now more like a time share resort, with the guest accommodation right at the water's edge, an even better observation point for whale sightings.
The window of opportunity to see the whales in the bay only lasts for a few months, during the winter now in the south. By Spring time the whales will depart and head back to their usual home, perhaps further south near Antarctica.
But right now Central Beach is the place to be where it's a whale of a time and the center of the fertility festival, at least for the whales. In fact there is more than one species of whale to be found in this bay now, including the Southern Right Whale.
Sadly this very spot on Central Beach, at the Beacon Isle, used to be a Whaling station in previous centuries. Whales were hunted here for their oil to make lamps apparently. Many were slaughtered in those dark days of our past. Fortunately those days are over and whales are now protected, at least in most parts of the planet, though some nations way up north might still feel the need to hunt them.
Here they are the town's totem creatures, since there are perhaps only a handful of bays on the entire south coast of Africa where they can be found giving birth every winter. Cape Town is one of them. Hermanus, just outside Cape Town is another. And this Plettenberg Bay is a third, about 550km east of Cape Town, along Africa's southern shore.
This sheltered and protected marine sanctuary is just a magical place to discover and explore the marine life that is so prolific, including seals, little dolphins called porpoises, and of course the gigantic whales. It's a winter wonderland for nature lovers and health seekers.
The mild climate, fresh air and wide open space make for a real paradise on earth, where the rest of the world can be left behind as one surrounds oneself in wide open sea, sky, mountain and forest. It's the perfect place for the meditating yogi or aspiring transcendentalist who wishes to get away from the bustle of the material world. Ideal for the nature lover and wild animal enthusiast.
Now you know, this is the best kept secret in southern Africa. Come and find out for yourself when you get the chance. You will love it so much that you might want to stay. Those who work from home can make this their permanent holiday abode, where every day is another day in paradise.
