It's another beautiful warm winter day here on the southernmost shores of Africa, in the region known as the Garden Route. It's a winter paradise where dogs live even better than some humans in poorer harsher parts of the world.
Today the adventure took the road less traveled and the explorations bore significant fruit. I came across a very large root bulb, bigger than usual. These have recently been exposed by the massive storm a few weeks ago. They are indigenous dune cover plants that live on this beach.
The massive wave swell churned up the sandy dunes and exposed numerous of these roots. I make a point of tossing them back into the higher dunes so that they may be able to grow again into plants. This one looks like it has a chance to regrow, with its long roots.
Man's best friend in this part of the world is not the cow but the lowly dog. They have license to roam freely in this stretch of the beach. What a fun place for them and their owners who bask in the weak winter sun rays as they stroll along the beach.
Nature comes with varying degrees of wild or tame in it. Even humans are nature in its tamed and civilized form. Wild animals like whales and seals here just of shore, are a more primal form of nature.
Yet dogs are somewhere in between. They are domesticated, as well call it. Still raw animal, but also trainable. It makes for an interesting categorization of nature, from polished to brute. Similarly geology and climate can also reveal wild or gentle nature. Here it's one of the most gentle and tolerable climates and geology, which is why it's a marine reserve area.
The dogs are a delicate balancing act in that they need space to play but also need to be restricted, lest they disrupt the other endangered species in the area. Life is about having systems, fences and laws. Rule of law. Although the laws of nature also dictate throughout. The balance of the scales requires constant effort.
These dogs have fun off the lead because they are domesticated and trained and thus well behaved, like a good child. We don't let our child just run free, or do as it wishes. We train them and protect them from predators. It's crucial.
All our dependants and those weaker than us deserve our protection, from themselves and from others. Any philosophy that claims kids should be free to choose regardless of their parent's say, is a broken idea devoid of common sense or nurturing insight which is meant to be there in parents and guardians. That is the law of nature.
Rare sea weed usually found further west in the colder Atlantic Ocean near Cape Town, compared to this part of the Indian Ocean.
Anything that tries to deviate from the laws of nature will get eaten by the predatory sharks that lurk hidden all about. You'll go extinct. It's a simple law that has kept us alive for millennia. Scientists may believe that they can engineer new hybrid versions of nature, but those that are too experimental will go extinct due to inability to reproduce. So they laws of nature will retain their own balance and reversion to the mean.

My best friend always said that dogs at the beach are always happier. Without a doubt, furry friends are like happy children when they arrive at the beach.
Yes it seems that we all become uplifted at the beach by the good atmosphere and ions.
