Such an illustration is certainly for someone who thinks that the snail is shedding its shell like someone taking off their clothes. In essence, this gastropod is polyphyletic, because in its past, the shellless state had appeared many times. It's a slug. Most of the slugs are generalists. They feed on organic matter such as the leaves of live plants, moss, fungi and even carrion. It is also hermaphrodite, has complete reproductive organs, female and male.
This one that I found this morning is a small Deroceras. Deroceras is a genus of air-breathing land slugs. It has a mantle which contains internal shell plates. In some images it is also seen that on the right side of the mantle there is a respiratory opening called a pneumostome.
