This is my prized Yellowwood tree growing in my backyard. I grew this tree from a seed I collected at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I was enamored by the large Yellowwood growing there. In the fall I took some seeds to grow in the Spring. The Botanic Garden had a library the public could access. There I researched how to store and propagate the seeds of Yellowwods and other species. I was working on a new wing for the adjacent Brooklyn Museum and lunch time I would stroll through the gardens. American Yellowwood (Cladrastis kentukea)Kentucky Yellowwood, originated in a narrow range in the east central United States. They are in the Locust family with compound leaves but have no thorns. The bark is smooth gray, similar to the American Beech tree.
This may be America’s most inherently valuable native tree for landscaping.
Algae, lichens and moss growing on the smooth gray bark gives the tree it's individual character.

Would like to enter this post in the Amazing Nature Contest...Amazing I now have a mature Yellowwood tree of my own after being in awe of one over 40 years ago...
Impressive tree! Wow! You grew this from seed!!
Very impressive when grown by it'self, especially when it flowers every 2 or 3 years.
That's incredible and inspiring Mike! You must feel so proud to have grown that beauty by seed, and 40 years ago? Smiles!!
The tree did all the work.. I just had to live long enough to enjoy it...😉
A real beauty with character.
I have some trees I'm growing, some Acacia sp, Anadenanthera pergrina, Atherosperma monschatum (just to name a few) that will probably out live me too.
Wow, a self grown beauty from a botanical garden ^^ .. Thanks for that amazing story behind that tree .. I am actually a huge fan of botanical gardens and really like the idea you have a personal piece from one in you backyard, hehe ^^
I have a few more Yellowwoods that were grown from those seeds I collected 40 + yrs ago..This one is just the best. Would be nice to go back to the gardens to see if the original tree is still there. Thanks 4 your support 🙀😊
