Zoological Museum of Belarusian State University (Minsk)

in WE ARE MOVING3 years ago (edited)

I visited this museum many years ago, when I was still very young and was very impressed. I have never seen so many animals anywhere else. You could see how big some of them were. It seemed to me that animals from all over the world were collected there.
And that's how I decided to bring my daughter there. I think her reaction can be seen from these photos.

The Zoological Museum of the Faculty of Biology of the Belarusian State University was established in 1921 on the initiative of the head of the Department of Zoology, Professor Anatoly Vladimirovich Fedyushin, who donated about 250 copies.
In 1940, the museum's fund consisted of more than 6 thousand units of only vertebrates. During the Second World War, only a third of the collection survived. In 1948 the museum resumed its work. In 1981 it was reconstructed and expanded.
Currently, the collection fund of the museum is the largest collection of zoological objects in the republic (stuffed animals, bird clutches, preparations, osteological material and other both vertebrate and invertebrate animals), with a total number of more than 102 thousand items. The scientific collections of the museum are stored in special modern rooms with a total area of 980 m². The zoological collections include 260 species listed in the Red Books of the CIS countries and the world.(Quotes from Wikipedia)

Over the past decade, the exposition fund has been replenished with such rare species as the red wolf, the wandering albatross, ostriches, hyacinth macaws, chimpanzees, as well as numerous tropical insects and a number of other exhibits that are not found in the natural history museums of Belarus. In addition, the museum has a significant number of long-extinct fossil animals, for example, fragments of the skeleton of a fossil elephant (the only finds in Belarus) discovered in 2006 during the construction of the Minsk Metro. Also, a series of species new to science are concentrated here, unique zoological exhibits of the 19th-20th centuries are stored. As well as unique albinos and chromists with unnatural coloration of the covers. The main fund of the museum is annually replenished with new acquisitions, the average annual growth rate is 1100 items.(Quotes from Wikipedia)

Some of the exhibits were huge and intimidating, I would not like to meet them in nature.
