One calm and sunny afternoon, more than twelve years ago, I remember I was outside playing soccer with some friends. There were no challengers and we had the communal street closed to prevent, or at least that was the objective, vehicular traffic.
Suddenly, one of the neighbors catches my attention calling my name. "Hey Romner, isn't that Parrot yours?". Turning around, there stood Lorenz, on a neighbor's fence with a badly injured wing. At the moment, we had not given her any name, but in our house my mom had some birds that stayed at home after being "cured or saved".
I want to clarify that my mom is not a doctor or veterinarian, she only took a first aid course, but with that knowledge she has managed to rescue and save the lives of several animals, including birds. Lorenz, the protagonist of this post, was one of them.
There Lorenz was that afternoon, with a badly injured wing, making it difficult for her to fly. I immediately looked for a broomstick for her to ride on and proceeded to take her to my mom. Once home, we began to take care of her and clean her wound. We also fed her and put her with the other birds so she could socialize with some of her own kind.
At home, we never clip the birds' wings and we never keep them locked up. We give them their space and total freedom, but that's the interesting thing, they decide to live with us and become practically our family. Here is the title of the post. The loyalty shown by Lorenz, and not only her, but all the animals that we have had the fortune to share with them with affection, love and respect, show us a love and loyalty incomparable to the one that our own usually give us. There is no love more pure and loyal than that of animals, intelligent and devoted beings to those who treat them well with love and respect.
Lorenz decided to stay with us and in the end, she became much more attached to me than to my mother. What happened was that my mother had to work and I had no job, so I stayed at home and took care of her, shared and ate lunch with her. Little by little, Lorenz became attached to me, so much so that nowadays she is looking for me around the house and she is jealous of my family, who she "throws at me" when they get too close to me and she is present.
In these long years with her by my side I have learned a lot about bird care. She used to eat sunflower seeds, however, those food products have become very expensive and her diet has adapted to grains, cereals, vegetables and fruits that we usually prepare and cook. Lorenz loves to come to the kitchen while we prepare lunch and starts "singing", although more than singing, she tries to imitate with tunes the words she has learned to mimic over time.
The most common and best mimicked words and phrases are: my name, he usually calls me when he sees me walking in the garden, watering the bushes or sometimes he shouts my name when he hears me far away in the living room or in the bedrooms. The second phrase he usually says is "give me your paw", a word we say when we place our hand on his paw so that he can move it or walk it with us. The third sound she usually imitates is the sound of cats. Yes, Lorenz mimics the meowing of those little felines and it gives me a big laugh when she does it.
They are intelligent and obedient birds, with the passage of time has learned to obey some orders, for example, when night falls we send her to sleep and she proceeds to go to her warm home waiting for a new day.
I wanted to introduce you to this life companion, who in spite of being free, in her freedom decided to live with her rescuers. I am very grateful for all the love she has given me and I know that someday she will leave whether she decides to go away, which I doubt, or simply pass on. His memory will live on and live on in my memory, and now in yours as well. Thank you very much for taking the time to read our story, Lorenz sends you a meow with love xD
