Its depth reaches up to 298m. The lake is located in a deep and closed valley. It is surrounded by high mountains on all sides, especially on the west and east. In the east is the mountain Galičica (2255m) and in the west Mokra mountain and Jablanica (1945m). The lake is located at an altitude of 695 meters. Lake Ohrid Basin has 40 rivers. Winds cause waves to form on the lake. The most common are southeast and east winds. The steep wind blows from the west, while the north and south winds are frequent.
The shores of Lake Ohrid have been inhabited since prehistoric times. The oldest archeological settlements date from the Neolithic period, around 6000 BC. Thanks to such features, in 1980 Lake Ohrid and the city of Ohrid were declared a World Heritage Site, under the protection of UNESCO.
