Hoy es un buen día para recordar y agradecer lo mucho que la Tierra nos da en su vasta abundancia y aunque a veces pueda ser formidable y hostil, el humano puede serlo aún más!
Pudiera hablar por horas de lo hermosa que es la tierra, de cuánto nos da, de cómo nos beneficia estar en contacto con ella y de cuánto la disfruto pero dejemos de ser el centro por un momento y pensemos realmente en ella.
Today is a good day to remember and be thankful for how much the Earth gives us in its vast abundance and although it can be formidable and hostile at times, humans can be even more so!
I could talk for hours about how beautiful the earth is, how much it gives us, how we benefit from being in contact with it and how much I enjoy it but let's stop being the center for a moment and really think about it.
Tomemos este día como un recordatorio para sensibilizar(nos) con el medio ambiente, para observar nuestro comportamiento y ver cómo nuestras acciones afectan el lugar en el que vivimos. Seamos amables con la tierra, hagamos algo por ella desde nuestro lugar. Es difícil fomentar estas conductas cuando hay grandes empresas que contaminan en un porcentaje mil veces mayor de lo que puede hacerlo una persona promedio a lo largo de su vida, pero realmente estamos en paz utilizando eso como excusa? Mi conciencia no me lo permite, así que trato de aportar un poquitico desde donde estoy.
Let's take this day as a reminder to be environmentally aware, to observe our behavior and see how our actions affect the place where we live. Let's be kind to the earth, let's do something for it from our place. It is difficult to encourage these behaviors when there are big companies that pollute in a percentage a thousand times higher than what the average person can do in a lifetime, but are we really at peace using that as an excuse? My conscience does not allow it, so I try to contribute a little bit from where I am.
Mi forma de hacerlo es limitando el uso de plásticos. Usando bolsas reciclables y reusando las bolsas desechables que ya tengo. Prefiero optar por envases de agua duraderos, por ejemplo. Recordemos que el plástico tarda cientos de años en degradarse y ya estamos comenzando a ver sus consecuencias. Estudios señalan que estamos consumiendo microplásticos (MPs) en nuestras comidas e incluso en el aire que inhalamos. Se ha hallado MPs suspendidos en el mar, donde son consumidos por peces que a su vez son alimento para peces más grandes que terminamos comiendo los humanos; también hallaron partículas de MPs en el tejido pulmonar de pacientes con cáncer, así que creo que es un buen momento para tomar conciencia sobre ello.
My way of doing this is by limiting the use of plastics. Using recyclable bags and reusing the disposable bags I already have. I prefer to opt for durable water containers, for example. Remember that plastic takes hundreds of years to degrade and we are already beginning to see the consequences. Studies show that we are consuming microplastics (MPs) in our food and even in the air we inhale. MPs has been found suspended in the sea, where it is consumed by fish that in turn are food for larger fish that we humans end up eating; they also found MP particles in the lung tissue of cancer patients, so I think it is a good time to become aware of this.
Ser un mejor turista también es una buena forma de aportar algo. Cuando visito lugares de la naturaleza procuro siempre llevarme mis desechos y un poquito más de lo que hay allí. Ya es común visitar sitios como la playa y encontrar basura en el lugar sin tener que buscar mucho.
No les voy a decir que ahorrar ese litro de agua extra al cepillarnos los dientes salvará el mundo, menos aun cuando la industria textil, por dar un ejemplo, malgasta tanto este recurso; pero estemos más atentos al momento de hacer uso de ella. Tratemos de evitar el fast fashion, compremos ropa duradera, extendamos la vida útil de la misma donando la que ya no usamos y dando espacio a prendas de segunda mano.
Being a better tourist is also a good way to contribute something. When I visit places in nature I always try to take my waste and a little bit more of what is there. It is now common to visit places like the beach and find garbage there without having to look hard.
I'm not going to tell you that saving that extra liter of water when brushing our teeth will save the world, even less when the textile industry, to give an example, wastes so much of this resource; but let's be more attentive when making use of it. Let's try to avoid fast fashion, let's buy durable clothes, let's extend their useful life by donating the ones we no longer use and giving space to second-hand clothes.
No es necesario hacer cambios grandes sino duraderos. Tratemos de inspirar con el ejemplo, del equilibrio de la naturaleza depende nuestro bienestar, así que si no lo hacemos por ella, hagámoslo por nosotros.

It is not necessary to make big changes, but lasting ones. Let's try to inspire by example, our well-being depends on the balance of nature, so if we don't do it for her, let's do it for us.

Relacionado con los que dices de los plásticos, es de los problemas mediambientales más difíciles que afrontamos y cambiar esa mentalidad tardará y seremos los seres humanos quienes sintamos ese efecto negativo en el corto, mediano y largo plazo.

Tal cual, es un problema difícil que va más allá de lo que podemos imaginar. Es un trabajo complicado porque los más involucrados en tal contaminación son las grandes empresas. Ojalá se tomen medidas pronto.
