Due to the extreme heat in the Middle east country, most of the plants and vegetables are struggling to survive. Luckily, I have a very sunny window sill in our apartment. So we take advantage of it by growing herbs and a few vegetables in the pot. I feel grateful for these plants for keeping the kitchen cool and shady, while adding natural decoration and aroma to our kitchen too.
Most of the herbs I am growing are my favorite such as Celery, thyme, basil, mint and onion leaves.
Lettuce and water spinach leaves (kangkong) are easy to grow. For the lettuce, cut the bottom part of the lettuce and leave it to soak, wait for a few days, some leaves at the center will pop out. For the water spinach, Just simply soak the stem in a glass of water, change it every 2 - 3 days, wait for the roots to develop and transfer when it's stable.
Regrowing Basil from stem cutting. Basil needs at least 6 hours of sunlight per day in order to thrive indoors.
Mint, the perennial herb is also very easy to grow. They can grow in a partial shade to full sun. Mint herb grows fast so it is important to trim it regularly and keep the soil moist but avoid over watering it.
How convenient to just pluck them when you need them, right from your kitchen. It really adds a wonderful flavor to the dish.
Homemade Manakish with zaatar, top with fresh Basil
I usually water them when I feel the soil is dry and light. Good drainage is important to prevent root rot to the plant.
Growing herbs and vegetable garden indoor is not impossible, it just require a little effort and patience and you'll reward with lots of benefits. A relaxing hobby one can always enjoy.
